Where to spend a July trip vs Christmas Market trip?

Hello - My wife and I are looking at making a two week trip to Germany and/or Austria in July (you can see another post about possible locations) in addition to a Christmas Market trip during the week of Thanksgiving and trying to determine which area is best for that time of year.

We will be traveling with our 5 year old, so I know that changes things (less moving bases, need to have some things to keep her busy, etc).

We want to spend two weeks at two bases in July (would only really do a third base if it is to spend the last night or two right at our airport home to make things easier. For the Christmas markets we would prefer one location, but could squeeze in two if it was a simple transfer and didn't cause a long day of travel to get to airport on the flight home.

We have looked at Bavaria (I know it is a huge area) or other parts of southern Germany for two weeks. In Austria we are open to idea, either Vienna or Salzburg or Innsbruck. From what I have read Salzburg > Innsbruck from a tourist perspective.

We are looking for the smaller/more laid back towns vs the large cosmopolitan towns (I mentioned how we lobed Bruges and Sienna in previous post). We do enjoy the natural beauty, but get with a little one, hiking is not the most convenient, and don't want to spend a lot of time driving from location to location.

So I am kinda torn, do we do two weeks in Germany earlier and then Christmas Markets in Austria? Or switch it around- two weeks in Austria (and add in Switerland or Germany as a second base if two weeks is to much? and then do Germany for the Christmas markets? I know it won't be warm and sunny (of course since it is winter) so if it is too cold with the little one, it may make things less than desirable in Austria (is Austria colder than Germany since it is higher elevation, or where we are looking pretty much a wash?).

Is one area have "better" Chrismtas Markets - I know that is very subjective, and would want ease of access to other towns/markets (if we stayed in Vienna, we would want to be able to visit some smaller towns possibly. I know we would be at the very beginning of the start of some of the markets since Advent doesn't start until Dec 1 - so that being said I am guessing the bigger cities are ore likely to be open (I found a list of the dates in the past of some of the markets)

anyway- I know that is rambling, but any and all advice appreciated.

cheers

If you like natural beauty with access to Salzburg, the area around Königsee is amazing. Hiking, chill time, boat rides, salt mine, gondola. We stayed near Ramsau at a fantastic little family hotel

I guess I should clarify the question- if you had 2 weeks in the summer and one week over thanksgiving- would you spend 2 weeks in Germany and one week in Austria for the markets, or vice versa? (2 weeks in Austria + a second base) and one week near Munich/other parts of Germany?

First, this should be 2 totally separate posts. One for your July trip and another for your November trip.

For Christmas markets with one week I’d fly into and out of Munich. I’d spend 3 nights in or near Innsbruck. Innsbruck is incredible during this time of year. Our favorite for Christmas markets and alpine scenery. With a car I’d stay in Hall in Tirol at Gasthof Badl (stayed here 5 trips), 15 min from Innsbruck.

I’d then base for 4 nights in the Berchtesgaden area (love Ramsau bei Berchtesgaden) at Pension Mayringerlehen (stayed here 5 trips). Ramsau is a cute village, alpine scenery and nice place for walks. Love Berchtesgaden (10 min away) and its Christmas Markets, plus the Konigssee is very close (15 min away) as is the Rossfeld Panorama Road above Berchtesgaden. Gorgeous drive. We’ve done it in early December. Salzburg is less than 40 min drive away. Easy to park in Salzburg at the underground old town lot. One day drive to St. Gilgen, look around at the cute village and market, and hop on the Wolfgansee lake ship and see Strobl and St. Wolfgang. Great way to spend an afternoon!

You need to settle on something. Both in summer and winter you can go from Innsbruck south into the Stubaital and Wipptal (Brenner pass). From Innsbruck you can go north into Bavaria and east and west in the Inntal (Inn river valley). South into Sudtirol (German speaking northern Italy). Plenty of Christmas markets and summer Alm and hiking places in the Alps. Your choice for Switzerland or Germany. Just dress your 5 year old for winter (It's not that bad). From Innsbruck maybe the Stubaitalbahn to Fulpmes summer or winter.

For me Germany is the place for Christmas markets. Plenty of posts here for recommendations.

I really like the Austrian Alps in the warmer months. Late spring into summer is fantastic. But that is my taste. I stay for 10+ days at several locations. I have my own car. I usually avoid tourist areas too. Snow in the Alps in December.

I'd make Switzerland another trip.

We lived in Augsburg, Germany for four years and would NOT go to Germany in the Winter. At Christmas time it gets dark at 4:30 PM and it is cold.

In July, you can enjoy the nice weather.

If you only have two weeks, stick to Bavaria (Munich, Garmisch/Fussen) and Austria (Salzburg, Vienna and Innsbruck).

If you have more time, consider doing The Romantic Road which includes great medieval walled towns like Rothenburg Ob der Tauber, Dinkelsbuhl and Donauwurth. https://www.romanticroadgermany.com

While it does get dark early in winter, the Christmas markets shine at this time. We’ve don’t trips in winter with the main focus of seeing the towns during the Christmas markets. Loved going at this time of year for this reason.

For the Christmas markets I really love Munich and the surrounding area in Bavaria. That said, the Christmas markets don’t start there until the week after thanksgiving. I would definitely check the locations you’re considering to see when their markets start.

For summer I would choose one week in Berlin and one in Munich. That gives you history, scenery and tons of activity options.

Innsbruck and Salzburg do start in mid November. Our first trip was the week of Thanksgiving, starting the Sunday before thanksgiving.
