Where else to go from Heidelberg?

Hello Everyone,
Looking for some suggestions... My family of 4 (kids are 9 and 6) will have about a week in Heidelberg. We're planning on spending 3-4 days there looking at castles and such, and then wanted to travel somewhere else not too far for another 3 days or so. Looking for somewhere fun, relaxing and easy to get to with kids.

Thank you!!

Will you have a car? And how far is not too far? 3 hours of travel could get you to places in France, Luxembourg, or Switzerland if you want to see something besides Germany. In about 3 1/2 hours you could get to Munich too.

We are considering a car. Originally we were planning to take a train to Interlaken and stay in Murren for a few days. But then the flight back from Switzerland to SF is twice as much as from Munich. Plus the logistics of train connections seemed too difficult (or maybe it's just me?)

So, to answer your question, yes 3hrs is fine. Looking for somewhere quaint and relaxing (not big cities like Berlin or Paric, etc)

thanks!!

Colmar or Strasbourg, France, perhaps? Alsace is very interesting.

Speyer - right on the doorstep and very special.

Deidesheim - a beautiful small village on the Weinstraße with an annual goat festival - just down the road.

While in Heidelberg, take a drive up the Neckar River towards Bad Wimpfen. The scenery somewhat resembles the more famous Mittelrheintal, with steep valley walls, beautiful towns and plenty of castles.

Seconding Nigel's suggest, nearby Speyer has a very kid-friendly Technik Musuem, as well as simply being a very attractive small city.

The Speyer Technik Museum is mostly road vehicles, aircraft and space, with a few rail exhibits thrown in. There is also an interesting collection of traditional mechanical music players.
