What towns along middle rhine are worth stopping in?

We are staying in Boppard (Thanks Russ for all of your info and advice) - will have 4 nights there - the first day we will spend in Boppard, day 2 going to take a train down the river and likely visit Sankt Goar and Oberwesel. Day 3 train to Bacharach then to Bingen and ride the KD Ship back north. Day 4 we are going to go to Koblenze to ride the cable car and have lunch at the Fortress/Castle Biergarten. The chairlift in Boppard is a hard no from the wife as we will have a daughter turning five on this trip with us.

Are there other towns worth stopping over on the train to see? Even if just an hour and grabbing abeer or wine until the next train arrives?

Options I see on google maps:
Bad Salzig
Hirzenach
Fellen
Trechtingshausen
Spay

or if any that are an easy ferry crossing across the river (close to train station, close to downtown area) - we are up for that as well

cheers

The Boppard ferry crossing + a short walk into the town of Filsen (train station) gives you access to the other side of the Rhine. Ride north from there to Osterspai and Braubach. Both are great small towns for wandering around.

Of the towns you mentioned, Trechtingshausen would provide walking access to Rheinstein Castle and to Reichenstein Castle.

The VRM Guest Ticket you receive from your hosts in Boppard are valid for travel on this east-bank railway as well.

Nixit- I have looked at Marksburg, but looks like sort of a pain to get to from Boppard with a little one - the ferry crossing puts us a long ways from the train station - or we ride up to Koblenz to cross the river?

Off the Rhine, but Bad Ems is a nice town near Koblenz, it is an old Spa town, no cable car or chairlift, but they do have a funicular with a brewery/restaurant at the top. Also a Bath Sauna, the pools are family friendly, with a textile free sauna area separate.

Of course, you could also venture up the Mosel, to Cochem and Moselkern. There is Burg Eltz, a fully preserved castle.
