what to do with extra days

Would like all you travelers to weigh in. Need to be in Germany, a small town near Kaiserslautern, March 29 to April 5th. From April 5th to 12th, I would like to just sight see. Have been to Europe extensively, and will do this by train. Thought about Amsterdam, but would like some warmer weather. Any suggestions? I will fly into Frankfurt, and depending on where we go, will determine the departure airport. thanks all!

How close to K-lautern do you need to be? I spent 3 days recently very close by, in Hochspeyer, at a family-run farm, and did day trips from there. But it's not some town I'd promote strongly, and it's not clear what sort of sightseeing you mean. Do you have to go into K-lautern regularly during that week? Has your extensive travel included this part of Germany previously? How small a town are you looking for?

Bad Kreuznach is a nice enough place about 1 hour by direct train from K-lautern, around 40,000 residents. Do day trips from there to the city of Mainz (30 min.,) Bingen (20 min.,) Bacharach (40 min.,) - all 3 of those are on the Rhine River, btw. Rüdesheim is just across the river from Bingen by ferry.

Bad Sobernheim (open-air museum and spa town, 20 min.,) Idar-Oberstein (40 min.) and Bad Münster am Stein (5 min.) would all be feasible. Bad M. a. S. is a spa town with about 4,000 inhabitants and being that it's so close to Bad Kreuznach could also work as a base town for these same destinations. But BK would likely offer more to do at that time of year.

The Open-air Museum in Bad Sobernheim is open daily except Mondays. Request a handout in English at the entrance. A very cool trip through time as you visit the centuries-old buildings from the region that were moved here for preservation and appreciation.

You cohad take the train out of Franfurt and go to the Rhine Valley. Not more than an hour or so. Base in St Goar .. Then flat down the Rhine and visit all the great little towns and sip great beer or wine. baccarat is great! You can go even as far north as Koln. We stopped at Boppard and had a great time. there are so many castles along the river. You can even go to Burg Elz over on the Mosel. personally, if you are considering Amsterdam.. Bundle up and just go. I was there during an October and it was glorious!. Safe travels!

Hi,

If not too pressed for time, I suggest Bad Ems as an interesting small town,...might be a bit far from Kaiserslautern.
