What to do on the trip from Augsburg to Frankfurt

At the end of our trip in September we'll be making the trip from Augsburg to Frankfurt before the flight home. We don't have a set time where we have to be in Frankfurt since our flight isn't until the following morning so we are hoping to make a stop or two on the journey to get a glimpse of this region. Since we'll be spending a few days in southern Bavaria we were hoping to see something a little different on this day-trip, perhaps some of the Romantic Road, or something along the Rhine. I have 2 main questions:

  1. What places are worth a stop? We're open to big-name stops like Rothenburg ob der Tauber or Heidelberg but we'd also be interested in smaller, quieter diamonds in the rough. They're just harder to find if you don't know where to look.
    1. Should we even bother with trying to do this stretch by car or just rely on Germany's excellent rail network? If a car makes it easier or gives us access to can't miss spots we can do it, but we are no stranger to the rail and would be just fine letting someone else get us from Point A to Point B.

You could drive the Romantic Road from Augsburg to Rothenburg odT, including a stop in Nördlingen or Dinkelsbühl, and then go directly to Frankfurt through Würzburg. That's pretty much on your way, but it's a 4 hour drive straight through. The road itself is not that interesting; it's the towns along the road that make it worthwhile, so make sure you would still have enough time to stop.

To see the small towns on the Romantic Road in a short time, a car is essential. Assuming you have one: I would drive from Augsburg to Nördlingen or Dinkelsbühl, take an hour's walk there and then on to Rothenburg. Two hours is enough for a rough overview. My last stop would be Würzburg with its magnificent Baroque residence and the old Main Bridge. By train I would probably concentrate on Nuremberg and Würzburg and then spend the night either in Aschaffenburg (Schloss Johannisburg, Pompeianum - reconstruction of a Roman villa from Pompeii), approx. 45 min from the airport, or in Frankfurt itself (never on the airport, which is simply dull).

As stated previously, if going by car, go up the Romantic Road. For smaller, less touristy places I'd suggest Nordlingen, where the old town is actually built inside a meteor crater that provided the defensive walls in the old days. I'll also suggest Aschaffenburg, just outside of Frankfurt; the old part of town along the river is really nice.

By train I recommend Nuremberg. Just put your gear in a locker at the train station, and walk across the street, thru the old city walls, and you're in the old part of town where it's mostly foot traffic. If you go to the city center, the main square is filled with the open air markets, and it's a short walk up to the castle or the other historical sights (except the old Nazi parade grounds, they are further out). As much as I like Munich, I think old Nuremberg is prettier.

Lee beat me to it. Do the Romantic Road. There are several towns on the road that escaped WWII with little or no damage and they are preserved late medieval walled towns. Dinkelsbuhel is very much like Rothenburg, but with fewer tourists.

"...we were hoping to see something a little different on this day-trip... something along the Rhine."

The Rhine lies beyond FRA airport and is probably a bit far. The Main River Valley immediately south of Würzburg (northern teriminus of the Romantic Road) is dotted with very attractive old-world wine towns in a setting not so very different from that of the Rhine/Mosel towns. You could enjoy some really good local "color" in this area, which is routinely bypassed by the international tourist crowd along the Romantic Road.

Sommerhausen (photos, scroll down)

Sommerhausen has not just a wine emphasis but is into art as well. It has a two-day pottery market - Töpfermarkt - and a 5-day "Kirchweih" celebration that take place in late September. Maybe those are your dates?? You can get an idea about these events from this video (in German.)

What is Kirchweih? - https://www.onetz.de/sites/default/files/flipbook/insert/2340489/bavarian_times_mai_klein_S34.pdf

These towns are connected to Würzburg by river, road, rail, and Radweg (bike bath.) Local railway map:

Sommerhausen is across the river from Winterhausen; get off the train in Winterhausen and walk across (also has bus service.)

Würzburg is terrific as well. If you overnight there you can take a direct train and be at FRA in 90 minutes the next morning.

I tend to share Travel Man's feelings about traveling last-minute to the airport prior to an international flight.

Not knowing your flight schedule, my suggestion for a final night in Würzburg may or may not make things too tight for you. So let's amend that suggestion...

On your last scheduled day in Augsburg, you do whatever you've planned (whether that's Munich, Augsburg or something else) then take off sometime between 5 pm and 8 pm for one night in Würzburg (a 2-hr. direct train ride from either city - or drive.) You'd then have a full day for the Main River area and/or Würzburg before heading to FRA for a final night.

Thanks everyone for the suggestions. Based on the feedback I’m considering cutting our stay in Augsburg short by one night so we can spend a night between Augsburg and Frankfurt. The Romantic Road area sounds like the way to go but I’m torn between Würzburg or a more country locale, perhaps a winery or B&B in the countryside. Does anyone have any places that they’ve stayed that they’d recommend?

A bit of logistics .... We will have a car for this part of the trip and our departure flight from Frankfurt is very early in the morning so we’ll be spending the last night at a hotel next to the airport.

Just a few minutes outside Würzburg and also on the Main River is the wine town of Sommerhausen. You can see Würzburg's fortress in the background of this view of the Main Valley and Sommerhausen:

Just north of Rothenberg is the small town of Bad Windsheim. I'd recommend getting a room there. It's off the beaten path and should be inexpensive, and it's a nice little town to walk around. If you go further north I'd recommend Kitzingen. They are slightly off the main highway, but not by much.

I think if you spend time in Rothenberg odT you're going to be getting to a hotel late if you go all the way up to Wurzberg.

Plenty of choices. I’d do one of two things without rushing too much. Spend the whole day in Wurzburg or spend a fair amount of time in Rothenburg, ending up at the very pretty village of Iphofen. I stayed here last autumn in an apartment at the Ilmbacher Hof, but there are a small number of inns in the village. The Deutscher Hof has rooms, as well as a fabulous restaurant.

Sommerhausen and Sommerach are two attractive little places. I revisited Kitzingen and Bad Windsheim last fall, after quite a number of years, they both appeared to be a little tired compared to some of their neighbours.
