What to do on arrival day in Munich

We will be arriving by plane from Rome in the early afternoon and I am looking for suggestions on how to spend the remainder of the day. We will be staying at the King's Hotel Centre on Marsstraße. I was thinking we'd check out the Hofbrauhaus for dinner, but any other ideas are appreciated.

Thanks :)

If you are heading to Hofbrauhaus for dinner, you might want to stroll thru the Marienplatz area on the way to and from. There is a huge pedestrian area, a couple of interesting churches and of course the city hall with the mechanical clock tower. Lots of shops, occasional street performers and on your way home the landmarks will all be lit up.

Hi Bxr- If the weather is crummy, you might spend a few hours in the museums that are not very far from your hotel. Otherwise as previously suggested head to the Marienplatz and wander around. A few blocks southeast of the Marienplatz behind Peterskirche is the Viktaulienmarkt, an outside upscale farmers market. Then wander over to the Hofbrauhaus for a bier and some oompah music. Instead of eating at the Hofbrauhaus I would recommend eating supper at a nice restaurant one block southwest of the Marienplatz named Zum Spockmeier at 9 Rosenstrasse. Rosenstrasse is the street heading south from the Marienplatz past the large department store, Galeria Kaufhof. If it is a warm evening, try to sit on the ground floor as the upstairs can get very warm. FYI, as expected, the restaurants facing the Marienplatz are slightly more expensive due to the location and the menu is limited at the Hofbrauhaus.

Have a great trip!!!

Thanks for the suggestions. For sure we will check out Marienplatz. I didn't know it was lit at night.

Kenneth - thanks for the suggestion about Zum Spockmeier!

Seconding the recommendation to have a beer and check out the Hofbrauhaus but to eat elsewhere (my preference is Andescher am Dom but I'm sure the other recommendation is good, too). The Hofbrauhaus is fun, but it's touristy and the food is just so-so while being pricey for what it is.

BXR- Sarah gave you another very good restaurant choice, Andescher am Dom . It's just harder to find...

.. especially if you are looking for "Andescher". ;) It's "Andechser", run by the Andechs abbey. otherwise it's easy - just walk along the southern front of the cathedral and you will find it. A good compromise between the noisy Hofbräuhaus and the - a bit pretentious - Andechser would be the Schneider Bräuhaus im Tal.

Sla019- Thanks for correcting the spelling of Andechser, and to be truthful, I was not that impressed with the food or bier at Andechser am Dom . I don't like to give questionable reviews of places that other reviewers tout since the service really impacts my reviews. And I am setting here on hold waiting to talk to the Marriott folks about reservations made before they announced the new redemption schedule tonight. Please continue to provide replies to information requests from other forum guests as you are obviously very knowledgeable about Germany and we appreciate your insights.

My spelling is rarely great, in English or in German, but at least on my netbook I get corrections for much of the English.

Anyway, surprised you don't care for the Andechs beer, it's widely considered one of Germany's best traditional breweries. I am a fan of what I consider the "3 A's" - Andechs, Augustiner, and Alpirsbacher. But my tastes tend to be towards the dry and hoppy. My favorite place to eat in Munich is actually the Augustiner brewery, but it's not in the city center. It was the first schweinhaxe I ever had, and still the best. But the blood sausage with kraut at Andechser am Dom was the finest version of that dish I've ever had, and for a touristy restaurant in the center the food is remarkably high-quality. The service is a bit abrupt, but that's pretty typical for any restaurant in that area.

+1 for wandering around the Marienplatz and Viktualienmarkt. We will be in Munich again this summer and my wife will insist on going to the Bratwurstherzl Am Viktualienmarkt for the Nürnberg sausage.
