What to do in Trier the day before GAS tour starts

We are arriving in Trier the day before the start of our GAS tour on October 1. We arrive in Paris from California a couple of days before that so should be over jet lag by then. A walking tour of Trier is included in our itinerary so I was wondering if the folks that have gone on this tour have any suggestions on what we can do that’s not included on that walking tour. We’ll have that evening and the next day free until our tour meets at 4 pm. And yes, I have my guidebook already!

Hello Claudette,
My husband and I took this tour in 2012. You are going to love it! We did a scrapbook which is linked to this website and should give you some ideas of things to do in Trier before the tour starts. Our scrapbook is under William and Theresa Barr. Trier is a lovely town and we know you will enjoy it.
Happy travels, Teri

Trier is lovely but not huge, and your walking tour will probably cover the main sights. I'd consider a boat ride on the Mosel, or if you feel like getting up early for your full day, you could train to Cochem and enjoy that lovely town and some wine tasting before taking the train back to meet for your tour. The train is a little over an hour.

We went in 2018 and really loved the Archaeological Museum. Trier was a huge Roman city and they had some amazing mosaics and funerary art and statues from that time, (Did a scrapbook as well archived under GAS tours 2018 Jodi Kelman) as well as other quite interesting things. There aren't really signs in English so get the audio tour. We didn't have time to tour Constantine's Throne Hall which is now a Church, but I would have loved to see the inside so I would recommend that. You go past it on your walking tour but there was a service so we didn't go in. There was also a service going on at the Dom/Cathedral though we did go in with the walking tour to the cloisters and then on our own quietly in the back. My husband and I had gotten up early to see it without a service too. So during your free time might be a good time to see it without a service going on. There are 2 bath house complexes and if you go to the Museum there is one we passed on our way there from the hotel that we didn't go in but that would be a good idea too. Have a great time!

When we took this tour in 2013 we rented a car the day before the tour started and drove to Luxembourg to see the American World War II cemetery where General Patton is buried and then on to St Avold in France for that larger World War II cemetery. Got to drive on the autobahn and see some charming German and French countryside. In Trier itself the Roman amphitheater is interesting. I would also echo another poster’s idea of taking a river cruise. You will absolutely love this tour!

After our walking tour we went to see the amphitheatre - very interesting. You could do a bike ride, or walk, along the Mosel. I also like the idea of a boat tour.

Oh gosh, I found lots to do there! The walking tour didn't really go in to anything except the Imperial Bath complex. I'm not sure that is a usual stop but our guide wanted us to go in. I had actually gone in on my free time the day before but they are huge so I didn't mind going back.

I spent time ahead in the Dom and the Basilika as our tour started on a Sunday and I knew these were not available for visits that day. There was also an organ concert in the Dom that was something like 2E to stay and hear! For myself, the walking tours never spend enough time in churches so I always plan extra time for them.

I also enjoyed the Landesmuseum (check to see if they have any special exhibits when you are there - I saw one on Nero which was very good) but did not get into the Cathedral Museum. I also did not have time to go into Porta Nigra (you walk by there on your walk but no time to visit).

A number of people on the tour went in to the Karl Marx house but I did not have time to see it either.

Here is an excellent link from the Trier Tourist Information board.

I spent a lot of time walking around looking at the old fortifications. If you're a military history buff that can be fun. If you don't mind a short train ride you can easy go up to Bitburg and see that town. If you like beer this is worth the trip.

I would go into the Porta Nigra! We spent a couple of hours in there. Well worth your time.
