Renting a car in Munich next month and got a quote from Gemut for a car from Europcar. Reviews scare me.
Be positive. About ten percent are very happy with Europcar. Car renters in general only post reviews if they've had a bad experience.
Why are you using Gemut? Is it cheaper than renting directly from Europcar?
No actual issues on Trustpilot perceivable. Still very good ratings.
Book directly, not via a reseller.
Be very careful with the agent and watch every line they put on the paper. We just came back from Scotland. We booked and paid them for Tesla at EDI. The lady called Carol told us that there may not have enough charge stations and she recommended a compatible car of Audi Q2 with discount. We were told to sign here and there on the paper. When we returned the car we were told that we had signed an agreement for additional cost instead of regular agreement and that we have to double of the original amount, which is not compatible at all. There was absolutely no mention of the additional cost during the conversation and signing. This company should really be shamed for cheating the people after a long flight. Try other rental companies.
Had a bad experience with Europcar in Great Britain in 2017.
Had a great price for a type of car that wasn't available and the replacement was not in my opinion equal.
Also, I had booked a car with a navigation system, and only very expense upgrades had nav systems.
If you wanted to rent a GPS it cost a fourture.
We did upgrade to a vehicle with a nav system and the cost of rental DOUBLED>
What I read here is two times the decision of the customer - not the fault of Europcar. If you don't like it, do not buy or subscribe.
David, obviously this is one opinion but I did not have a good experience recently with Europcar. I rented a car from them for a week while I was in Cornwall and Devon. When I picked up the car from the Europcar office in Plymouth, I was not happy with the agent, who kept trying to upsell certain perks and then tried to get me to upgrade my car by telling me it would be "safer." He said the cost was negligible but when I pinned him down as to the amount, it was an extra £150 per day.
He also did not go over the contract with me, and seemed annoyed when I stopped to read it. He was unclear about some of the car functions, and didn't seem inclined to help me figure them out. And the car itself was not one I particularly liked. The gas gauge never reached the "full" line, even when I filled it up, and the gas mileage was terrible. Much worse than the second car I rented a week later from Arnold Clark.
I asked him about what I should do with the car when I returned it on a Bank Monday, and he said he would let me know, but never did. Consequently when i got there to return it, I expected to just leave it in the lot, but it was gated and chained. He showed up about 5 minutes later but seemed surprised to see me. Obviously he had forgotten I was returning it then.
All small things but they added up. I had rented with Europcar on my first trip to England back in 1996 and it was fine then, but this time was not. I probably would not rent with them again, unless I absolutely had to.
I have rented cars in Europe 25+ times over the past dozen years, including three times in Munich (although not at the airport). About two thirds of my rentals have been from Europcar, either directly or through Autoeurope which, like Gemut, is a consolidator. I have never had a problem with Europcar, and they have become my preferred provider. I have found that booking directly through Europcar is slightly more expensive than booking through Autoeurope, once add-ons like drop-off fees are taken into account. However, if including an insurance package, there is usually a considerable price advantage with Autoeurope.
I will never rent with Europcar again. They lead you in with a low price, but adding any extras increases the rental by a huge amount. They said they would not accept insurance from my credit card without a special letter, and to add their insurance to a $200 rental would add $1000!! I was actually able to get the letter but when I turned it in they went over it with a microscope and charged me for a new wheel and tire for some minor scuff marks. Avoid like the plague....
