We are doing a road trip in Germany. We were planning not drive on any Austria territory. However the next driving segment is between Chiemsee to Mittenwald. We are thinking to buy a Vignette in case we need to take highway E45 unexpectedly. Are there other documents, tags, specific insurance we need to buy to avoid fine? Do we need to inform our car rental company in advance? Thank you for your to respond.
You should probably direct these questions to your rental car representative.
Probably best to get an International Driver's Permit from your local AAA
just in case. Many comments about rental car agencies requiring it, and
the rep at the counter not checking. But better safe than sorry.
Vignette and IDP have already been mentioned. Nothing else is needed. Ensure the rental car company knows you’ll be traveling to another country. It may add a small charge.
Thank you. We have the IDPs before leaving home.
I would skip any Austrian Autobahn. You don't need a vignette if you don't drive the Austrian Autobahns. Driving along the Inn on secondary roads is no problem. A little slower, but you will see much more. There are more and more quiet walls, berms and tunnels on the Autobahns blocking your view. Keep an eye out for speed cameras in every town. You did say road trip?
