I am looking for a Catholic Church that was present in the 1585 in Weinsberg and is still standing. The only information I have is "their joint tomb still can be viewed in the choir of the church at Weinsberg. Buried in 1585 & 1586.
I've passed by Weinsberg on the Autobahn, but never stopped. It's kind of striking from the road. However, that wasn't what you asked...
So, I looked it up on the German Wikipedia site, which usually contains information about a town's local churches. I can't find any information on a Catholic church that old. The oldest church in town is apparently the Johanneskirche, which is Lutheran, the predominant religion in the town. Apparently, most of the Catholic community in the town arrived as refugees from elsewhere after WWII (probably from the former German territories east of the Oder-Neisse line). The current Catholic church, St. Josef, was rebuilt in the 1950s. The article also mentions another Catholic church in the subvillage of Wimmental, St. Oswald, but doesn't state the date of it's construction.
I think Johanneskirche was a Catholic church and then became a Lutheran church after the Reformation in the early 1500s. There has been a church on that spot for 800+ years. Johanneskirche was built in 1204 AD according to the town's website.
EDIT: The 800 year old church has a website http://www.kirche-weinsberg.de. Perhaps you could email someone at the church and ask them your question in English and with your best German Google translation included. At the very bottom of their webpage it says Kontakt. Click on this link and ask your first simple question to see if anyone there can help you. Churches can sometimes have great records in Germany.
Hi all,
thanks for answering. Will check out that website and contact the church.
