Hello,
I'll be in Frankfurt in April for a work trip. I'd like to tack on 3-4 days and see the Alps. What would be a good town/city to base myself in? I'll be reliant on pubic transport.
Thanks!!
Imo there is no meaningful location between Frankfurt and the Alps which allow like day tripping into both directions - if this was the question.
So, base in Frankfurt and then travel 3-4 days to the Alps by train: https://int.bahn.de/en
Sorry, to clarify, I plan to leave Frankfurt for 3-4 days to explore the Alps and I'm looking for a base from which to do that.
Alps are huge and cover a few countries. Closest to Frankfurt is Switzerland. Germany has also a small part of it. So your question might be better in Swiss or Austrian forum.
Important for helping people: what means "explore" for you? Skiing, hiking, snow, a hut, a village, ...?
Edit: just coming to my mind - how about glacier express?
According to the Man in Seat 61 (seat61.com), there are direct trains from Frankfurt to Interlaken in about 5 hours. That would be my choice, though I'll admit I haven't been there and know nothing about it. Enjoy your trip!
You can easily take a train to the Alps, or drive, but it's 5-6 hours, minimum, to get down there, so expect to spend the best part of two days traveling. You have two main ways to do this, first is to go to Garmisch-Partenkirchen, or near there, and look around there at the mountains and castles, etc. The other option is to head towards Lake Constance, stay on the south end of the lake by the mountains, in someplace like Lindau or Dornbirn, and that way you can hit Switzerland, Austria, Lichtenstein, as well as Germany. Then you have the mountains as well as all the stuff around the lake.
