Traveling from Stuttgart to Eagles Nest then off to Neuschwanstein. Planning on spending the night somewhere in between. Is this too much? Any suggestions as to where to stay?

You might want to visit Neuschwanstein first as it is southwest of Munich. The Eagle's Nest is east of Munich and a short distance south of Salzburg. If you have extra days, you could spend it there or drop south into the Austrian Alps and Tirol (Innsbruck.)

Unless you need to be at the Kehlsteinhaus - some people call that the Eagles Nest - on a particular day you will be backtracking considerably to go back to the palaces near Füssen.

We stayed in Pinswang Austria when we went to Neuschwanstein. Stayed at an amazing family run place, Gutshof Zum Schluxen and even borrowed the owner's bikes and biked the path to Neuschwanstein. Alternately the car ride from there is 8 minutes tops.
I cannot speak highly enough about this hotel.
