Our cruise will have a stop at this port. What is there to see and do. I read that a trip to Berlin would take three hours?
We were in Warnemuende in August, and it was a beautiful little beach town. We didn't see the need to take a long train and bus trip into Berlin as it's a town worthy of a numerous day trip.
We walked around the port, and actually ran into my sister and brother in law who were there on Oceana Marina. On our stop, the weather was glorious, and we just enjoyed the day.
Warnemünde is a pleasant seaside resort with a great beach and a small, cozy old town. It's often billed as Berlins port by cruise companies, but the expensive Berlin trips they sell are a rip-off because you spend more time on the road than in the city. Some companies now offer trips to nearby sites too, which are the much better deal, and there's also a local company, Friends of Ed, that offers such trips and gets rave reviews (Tripadvisor). If you're adventurous you could also do these trips on your own... for less than 30€.
The region around Warnemünde offers so many sites, you really don't have to waste your money to see Berlin for maybe 5 or 6 hours. Here is a list:
Wismar, Stralsund, Lübeck - almost perfectly preserved towns of the Hanseatic League, all three World Heritage Sites.
Schwerin - the former capital of the duchy of Mecklenburg offers a fairytale castle just like Neuschwanstein, and the pleasant old town is a mix of half-timbered houses and 19th century government buildings surrounded by lakes.
Bad Doberan - summer residence of the Mecklenburg dukes, mostly visited because of the fantastic Gothic minster and the steam train. This steam train, Molli, runs through the old town and connects Bad Doberan with the beach resorts of Heiligendamm, the first seaside spa on the continent, and Kühlungsborn.
The most popular tour is Wismar and Schwerin, which is a nice combination of a typical Hanseatic town and a romantic castle. For a relaxed day in a historic town I would recommend Stralsund, which offers some good museums too. The combination of a Gothic minster, steam and a seaside resort is nice too. Bad Doberan can be done by bicycle from Warnemünde btw., so you bike to the town, take the steam train to one of the seaside resorts, and bike back to Warnemünde along the coast and through the so called "ghost wood".
On our first Baltic cruise, we did the Hanseatic cities tour which was fine except they showed us the expterior and not the interior of the Cathedrals- fab tho they were. Great history with a beer tasting and a fish sandwich off the boat... Second trip we took the morning to walk In Warnemunde and enjoy that beach, then took an afternoon tour to Bad Doberan and the glorious beach that is aways paired. Bought a beautiful hand painted stitched scarf that brightens everything and other interesting things from the artists right next to the beach. both are good trips, tho i loved the two different beaches enough to research a rental while there. Seemed lowkey and oh so pleasant to let days drift by.
Lübeck and Wismar are also my favourite cities in this part of Germany. You won't regret a visit.
