Wanting help/advise on day trips with local tour companies to Austria and Neuschwanstein Castle

Hi everyone,
We will be travelling to Germany in June with a Rick Steves Tour and have one free day in Munich. We have been to Munich before and want to try and explore something out of the city.

Our hope is to take a day trip with a tour company, rather than going on our own.
Looking for information on local tour companies you would suggest for day trips to Austria or Neuschwanstein Castle (not set on either, still looking at options). We are open to other day trips as well.

Any favorite day trips and/or tour companies you can suggest would be greatly appreciated!
Thank you for your help!!

does your tour go to Salzburg? If not it is a really easy do it yourself - no tour needed - and you can see Mozart's house he was born in, an excellent museum, walk around the old part of the city, ride a funicular up to the Fortress, get a nice lunch - several places could be recommended, the old church, and several other things, then back on the train and back in Munich 2 hours later.

No, unfortunately we do not go to Salzburg.
That sounds like a great idea! Can you give me some more details?

My worst travel experience world wide was visiting Neuschwanstein, a waster of travel time.

We used Mike's Bike Tours out of Munich for a day trip to Neuschwanstein. It included a bike ride and time for lunch. When I booked it, I thought my husband and son would not enjoy it as much, but they did. The Castle itself was fine, but the rest of the day was more enjoyable.
