Walking poles at Neuschwanstein

Hello! I’m still recovering from a knee sprain. I plan on using the horse carriage up and the bus down, but am worried about the remaining inclines. I purchased collapsible hiking poles to use. Will I look funny using them or is this common? And, if I put them in a locker at the front, how do I get them back? I read that you exit from a different place than where you entered.

Walking poles are very common as canes or walking aids in Germany. Then of course you will see lots of Germans out on trails with their walking poles.

Are you planning to carry these walking poles onto a plane? That can have some complications.

Yes. I’m not worried about the plane though. Just wondering how common it is to use specifically at that castle and how to retrieve them from the lockers.

Horse carriage fare going downhill is ( or at least was in 2011 ) half the fare going up.

I’m not concerned about the fare. My question was about whether many people used walking poles and how to retrieve backpack after the tour.

I had collapsible walking poles with me when we toured Neuschwanstein and other castles. They do come in handy as the stairways are often narrow and do not have ADA approved handrails. Sometimes I would carry only one into a castle as they can be cumbersome in some tight little areas in castles. Hopefully they have a nice wrist strap. My poles had a few different tips available and I chose the plastic ones not the metal ones so they would not scratch any wood or slip on stone. Practice assembling and disassembling them beforehand. You want to be sure they are secure before you use them.

Thank you for that info!! I do have wrist straps and plastic tips. I wasn’t planning on using them in the castle (only on the way up), but maybe I will! I didn’t know they were allowed inside.

I just emailed them and they said it was OK to bring inside since they have rubber tips. Thank you!!
