Has anyone visited Walhalla near Regensburg? I heard a BBC radio documentary on it last year and it sounded very interesting, but wikivoyage's reference to 350 steps up the hill to it from the nearest bus stop gave me pause. Worth it?
I've visited. It's exactly as advertised- a sort of Germanic Hall of Fame, no more, no less. If that sort of thing interests you, then go for it. I found it more worthwhile than the nearby Befreiungshalle above Kelheim, which is just a big building with two dozen or so identical statues. At Walhalla, at least, it's kind of interesting to see faces (or busts) attached to famous names.
I can't comment on the steps, but if you drive, the parking lot is just off to the side of the monument. No steps at all.
The Walhalla is an interesting curiosity. It makes a nice outing when you take the excursion boat from Regensburg.
Tastes differ evidently, because I preferred the Befreiungshalle in Kelheim. Indeed all identical figures of Greek goddesses, but that made it so elegant.
I have not been there but the Befreiungshalle in Kelheim I visited in 1992. Interesting from a historical perspective on the Allied campaign 1813-15 again Napoleon , ie, from driving Napoleon and les français from Germany to his final defeat at Waterloo. Even though the list of events, (battles, engagements) is rigged, it's still interesting and worth visiting. Notice that among the list where the Prussians and Austrians were the losers to Napoleon, these events are omitted, such as Dresden, Ligny, Montmirail, Lützen, Vauchamps, Brienne.
Thanks, I'll see how energetic I feel.
Just FYI nearby to Walhalla is the smallest Wine region in Germany. It's along the Danube.
