Visiting Munich Churches on Sunday (or Saturday)

A big part of my stay in Munich will be visiting all the beautiful churches that are around the city center. I have been to a couple of these before and enjoyed walking around, and viewing things at my own pace.

My question is, are these churches open in the same way on Sunday (or Saturday)? Or, are there tourist restrictions related mass on these days?

Thanks.

Everybody is welcome to attend Services — even the tourists! 😉

I have attended church services in Germany many times and even though I don’t fully understand German, the music can be sublime.

Yes, they are open but close during services. Of course, not in the sense that the doors are locked. You can always take a seat somewhere and look around, but you shouldn't walk around. There is a website that lists service times of the catholic churches in the inner city, so you can plan which church to avoid accordingly (there is no protestant church worth visiting; the only one of historical importance (pictures) was demolished by the Nazis in 1938).

Some are open for Sunday touring (Frauenkirche, St. Peter's) and some are not (Asamkirche, St. Michael's). These examples are drawn from info in Rick's self-guided Munich walking tour.

That's not correct. As a rule of thumb: every catholic church is open every day, not because of "touring", but to give the faithful the possibility to pray (of course nobody prevents other visitors as long as they behave respectfully, which unfortunately is not always the case). Also the Asamkirche and St. Michael are open every day, except when an event takes place. Protestant churches tend to be closed more often, but then there is no protestant church worth seeing in Munich.
