My husband is traveling to Frankfurt/Cologne for work next month so I am tagging along with our 2 year old son. I'm looking for suggestions on the best areas to stay in, things to do with my son, possible day trips outside of these cities.

Aachen is only about an hour by train from Cologne. A two year old would probably enjoy the train ride. The historical significance of Aachen would, of course, be lost on him, but he might enjoy just walking around with you as you see the sights.
In Frankfurt, there are a lot of parks to visit that have water play so make sure you have extra clothing. The Palmengarten is a favorite with kids of all ages. Great play grounds, water play and the plant houses are interesting too. The Frankfurt Zoo is popular or you can go outside of Frankfurt to the Opel Zoo. If your son can sleep in a stroller, then those would be times that you could visit a museum or two.
