Visiting both Konstanz and Salzburg - how many days in each?

Hello everyone,
We have family roots in Konstanz, so we are making it a point to visit there during our 7 days in Bavaria the first week of August.
I have our trip laid out as follows:
Day 1: Early flight into Zurich, train to Konstanz arriving by noon.
Day 2: Rent car, drive to Fussen
Day 3: Fussen
Day 4: Early drive to Salzburg, drop off car by 10am
Day 5: Salzburg
Day 6: Early train to Munich
Day 7: Munich
Day 8: Fly out

But I'm wondering if I should instead spend 2 nights in Konstanz and only 1 night in Salzburg?

Rick's Germany guide has a 'Salzburg in 1 day' section, so I'm wondering if 1 day is enough.

So far in Salzburg, I know we will do Rick's walking tour / or Sound of Music tour, then see an 8pm Mozart concert at the Mirabell Palace. But I'm not sure we need to stay for the 2nd day/night. In Konstanz, I see we can rent bikes and ride to Isle of Mainau, and take a ferry to some other lake towns.

Thanks for your advice

Well, I can't speak for Konstanz as I've never been there but I would recommend at least 2 nights in Salzburg. It's one of those places that is a joy to discover. Such beauty and wonderful sights - I loved it there and could easily have spent a week exploring the area. I don't know what you need to see in Konstanz, family-wise, but if you need an extra day, I would take it from Fussen or Munich. But that's me - and like I said, I know nothing of Konstanz or what you want to see there.

I feel you can get a good feel for each city with a full day in each, meaning 2 nights. If you’re taking the Sound of Music tour, then Salzburg needs two days. I only had about a 1/2 day in Konstanz and would have liked more time.

You should drop the car in Germany, just short of Salzburg and proceed by train to avoid any out-of-country drop fees.
Also, if you drive into Salzburg, you will have to steer clear of any motorways, or purchase a short term vignette for the car. And don't drive into Switzerland when you leave Konstanz for the same reasons.

Is the reason to go to Fuessen to see Neischwanstein? You could save a day for Kontanz or Salzburg by taking the 3 hour drive to Fuessen, see Neuschwanstein, then a 3 hour drive to Salzburg. Make an early afternoon reservation at Neuschwanstein and you should see it in 2 hours, making it an 8-hour day.

If you remove Fussen from your itinerary you could add a much needed day to Konstanz and Salzburg. It’s also more reasonable to take the train from Konstanz to Salzburg if not trying to get to Fussen, eliminating renting a car for this short trip.

Agree with Mona on dropping Füssen. The Salzburg region offers Alps, Alpine lakes and castles.

Castles, Palaces, etc... Suggest you visit Meersburg (Castle) as well while in Konstanz.

The King Ludwig II palace known as Herrencheimsee is in Prien, right on the railway trip between Munich and Salzburg. Spectacular place. The station has lockers for your bags while you tour. Take a ferry ride to the big island in the center of this photo.
