Visiting Berchtesgaden & Salzburg for 2 nights - Which town should I stay in?

Planning on going to the Eagles Nest, Documentation Center and maybe Konigsee. Will also visit Salzburg castle and cathedral. Is it better to stay in Berchtesgaden or Salzburg, or somewhere in between?

That’s a very full 2 days so you’re gonna have to stay right in Berchtesgaden IMO. It’s really too bad that you don’t have more time to enjoy this beautiful area at a friendlier pace. You’ll probably want a car or a driver because making transit connections will be hard on that schedule

I love Salzburg and think that it's a perfect place for two nights. There is so much to see and do, and the city has such a wonderful atmosphere.

But that's me - it really depends on you. Berchtesgaden is a bit quieter and more remote. It's a scenic place where most people go to enjoy the views and WWII sites. Salzburg, otoh, has more restaurants, cafes, sights, and music, with more of a bustle about it. It's a place where you can wander at will and just enjoy the atmosphere.

Thanks for all the replies! We're going in July and we'll have a car. We'll also be staying in Wertheim, Rothenburg, Garmisch and Hallstatt so maybe Salzburg is the way to go for more of a small city. Any recommendation on where to stay in Salzburg?

Motel One Marabell. Book through their website. You're a beautiful walk along the Salzach river. About a 10-minute walk to the downtown. You have asked a very difficult question and whatever you pick will be right.

By the way the Motel One right off the Autobahn is over the Salzach river bridge and just before you hit the city travel. They have parking available behind the hotel or there is a parking garage also available.

Tina, I have not stayed at the Motel One in Salzburg, but have stayed at others and can tell you that generally Motel Ones in Europe are very nice hotels at very reasonable prices. They are clean and comfortable, with courteous and help employees and nice amenities. Also if you sign up for their rewards program, you receive a free breakfast.

We stayed here in Salzburg and thought it was quite nice and a great location.

As lovely as Saltzburg was we enjoyed Berchtesgaden more but it looks like you have enough time in pretty villages surrounded by nature already so day trip may be enough. Koenigsee was amazing; I would flip the priority order and just do the WW2 stuff as time permits if it were me though
