My husband and I will be traveling from Salzburg to Hallstatt in mid-July. I understand there are several connections involved. I see that from Salzburg you can take a train then three buses right into town or take two trains and then the ferry into town. I worry about the connections and was wondering if anyone has any suggestions. We will be spending one night in Hallstatt as I understand the town is most enjoyable after the day-trippers leave.
The ferry crossing is beautiful and coordinated with the train schedule. I'd recommend this approach.
Connecting trains in Austria are a way of life. Know you platform numbers and be ready to exit the train as soon as it stops. Having manageable luggage is an advantage .
We really enjoyed the salt mine tour, and the view of the area at 4000 ft is spectacular.
Safe travels!
Marlena,
I would also recommend taking the train as it's a very easy trip, and the crossing the lake in Stefanie provides beautiful views of the town. There's one train change at Attnang-Puchheim (about 9 minutes) which is lots of time, and total travel time about 2H:20M or so (depending on which train you use).
One night doesn't provide a lot of time to see the Salt Mine or other sites. A two night stop would provide a more relaxing time for touring. I'd suggest allowing a bit of extra time when you visit the Salt MIne as you may want to stop for lunch at Rudolphstrum which is a old fort at the top of the funicular. The views from the patio are spectacular!
