We be in Munich for four days in early September (with a day trip to Salzburg). I am always looking for beautiful vistas. Any suggestions?
The region immediately around Munich is fairly flat and not terribly impressive for views. However, if the skies are clear and humidity is low, you can see all the way to the Bavarian Alps from certain elevated vantage points. Try either the towers of the Frauenkirche, or the hills near the Olympiapark.
However, you'll see the Alps much better from Salzburg, particularly from Veste Hohensalzburg. Whereas you need near-perfect weather to see them from Munich, only particularly bad conditions will obscure the view from Salzburg.
Best view in the immediate area of Munich is from the Olympia Tower. It's a commanding view in all directions, from 185 meters high. On a clear day the Alps are visible. Photo here.
Take U3 or U8 to Olympiazentrum, and walk across the pedestrian bridge over the busy Georg-Brauchle-Ring roadway.
You can also see the Alps from the tower of St. Peterskirche, in Marienplatz. If you are standing in Marienplatz, looking at the Neue Rathaus, it is right over your right shoulder.
If you happen to be going to the Deutsches Museum and the rooftop sundial display area is open you can see the Alps from there, weather permitting.
BTW, the view from St. Peterskirche down into Marienplatz, is also spectacular.
Hi Renee,
Do you mean mountain scenery? If so, is there a way you could spend more time in Salzburg or even better, 45 minutes from Salzburg in a place like St. Gilgen on the Wolfgangsee? If not, just an hour from Munich is the scenic Chiemsee.
