Vienna, Prague, Berlin, Cologne

We will be doing a road trip starting from Frankfurt, head south, via Munich then east to Salzburg, then circle back to Frankfurt to fly out. We will have 15 days total. Now, we want to decide if we have time to circle back with these 4 places or must drop a couple as it may not worth the time.

Between these 4 places, let's say if we would NEVER be back in this area ever, what are the 2 places that we must visit?

Hi,

Of the four places listed, which two are places for a must visit. I would say Berlin and Vienna, or drop one of them and choose Prague but I wouldn't. Cologne is the easiest to drop.

Using google maps, your route is 2200 kms, with Cologne to Frankfurt a mere 200 km. You are considering visiting 7 cities in 15 days. Will you arrive in Frankfurt on Day 1 or Day 0? Is your flight on Day 15 or Day 16? In other words, do you even have 15 days?

And my first question is nearly always "why by car?" If you want to visit cities, train travel is likely to be faster - even where there are no high speed trains, take into account driving in city traffic, pit stops, and parking. If you want to meander the back roads, visit villages, outlying sights, do some hiking in the mountains and forests then you need a lot more than 2 weeks.

You most definitely need the car if you are seeing villages in the Greater Berlin area in Brandenburg, villages described in T Fontane's " Reisen durch die Mark Brandenburg." Some of these places have refurbished in the last 25 years, a different world, in a way refreshing, don't expect to be assisted in English.

The only foreign tourists, if any, I've seen in these sites/places were a few Russians, otherwise everything is in German, signs, directions, menus, explanations, etc...just as it was over forty years ago.

You've listed four cities in the header that are different than the three in the body of the message. Are you doing any sightseeing in Frankfurt, Munich and Salzburg or are these just indicating the route you plan to take between the cities in the header, which you will spend time in? That's a lot of ground to cover in 15 days. I think you need to drop two out of Vienna, Cologne and Berlin, but which ones really depend on your interests. I was recently in Cologne and that would be an easy drop for me. We chose not to visit Berlin on this trip because it was an outlier by far. But you need to describe what you're interested in and I'm sure you'll get suggestions for a better and more efficient trip.

I see that this thread is part of a series about the same trip for a family of five. And while Switzerland and Venice may have been "eliminated from your enquiries," more suspects are being added. You've previously said that you're planning travel for "this year," and for "July." If you're leaving soon, have you at least booked rooms for the start and end of the trip? Are you going to leave the middle open and just see how far you get? Vienna, Prague, and Berlin are all big cities with a lot to see, where I'd want to have a bare minimum of three nights and two full days for sightseeing, but preferably more. They're also well served by train. With a car, I try to visit more rural destinations that would be harder to reach by train and easier to navigate into.
