Vienna from Munich?

Hello travelers!

This forum has been so helpful in guiding me during my last several trips to Europe. I really appreciate it.

I'm going to be in Munich in mid-July (solo) for the opera festival so will be based in the city. However, I've never been to Vienna and wondering if it is possible to do as a day trip? Or maybe take the train there and explore and spend 1 night there and return the next day to Munich in time for the performance. Is that too little time to do it justice??

I've been to Munich before (though there are sights I missed that I want to catch: Residenz; Neue Pinakothek; maybe 3rd Reich tour and/or Dachau; maybe Nymphenberg). I've also been to Nuremberg as a day trip and to Salzburg so would perhaps like to see something else.

Here's current itinerary if that helps with recommendations:

Day 1 (Saturday): arrive Munich at 1:40pm

Day 2 (Sunday) (performance at 6pm)

Day 3 (Monday)

Day 4 (Tuesday) (performance at 8pm)

Day 5 (Wednesday)

Day 6 (Thursday) (performance at 8pm)

Day 7 (Friday) (fly home)

Thanks!

Todd- Why don't you get up Friday morning and catch the train to Vienna ? Stay Friday night and Saturday night in Vienna then fly back to LAX from Vienna on Sunday...Seems like a long way to go for only 6 nights in Munich, 3 of which are wiped out due to work...

Todd its almost three hundred miles from Munich to Vienna. That's over 4 hours one way from train station to train station. No trip, in which you spend more time in transit than you spend there, is a day trip. There's more to see in Vienna than in Munich, so yes stay overnight. Go to Salzburg if you want a good day trip from Munich.
