For day travel in bavaria, is the vgn tages ticket more economical than the bayern pass. How do they differ in useage? thanks in advance.
The VGN TagesTicket, as it's initials imply, Verkehrsverbund Grossraum Nuernberg, aka Greater Nuremberg Transit Authority, is only valid in the greater Nuremberg area. But it is a big chunk of northern Bavaria. Bamberg to the northwest, Bayreuth to the northeast, Rothenburg to the west, Map is at their website, www.vgn.de.
There is the TagesTicket Solo for one person and the TagesTicket Plus up to 6 people traveling together. It can be purchased for reduced prices with validity in smaller areas, like just Nuremberg. The all-area TagesTicket Plus is just 20.60 EUR for a day.
At least a few years ago, there was also a 1-week version. I haven't examined the site recently.
so it does not apply relative to Munchen?
No, München (Munich) is not in the VGN. If your travel includes Munich, you"ll need a Bayern-Ticket.
For a few euro less, there is also the Regio-Ticket München-Nürnberg. It is valid for a few lines between Nürnberg and München, but not in the Verkehrsverbünde (metro districts) of Nürnberg and Munich.
