Using The Deutschland Ticket On Regional And Local Transit

My wife and I are going to Germany next month, departing 9/10 and returning 9/24. We will purchase Deutschland Tickets on 9/1 from www.germanytransitpass.com, canceling subsequent months.

I think I generally understand when/where the DT works, but I need to understand how to use it:

*we arrive into FRA and will take S8 and RB26 trains to Bacharach … do we simply walk onto the train and if/when asked for a ticket, show the DT pass in our Apple Wallet apps?

*will this work the same way for S-Bahn or U-Bahn operators in Munich?

*does the DT include a bar code that is scanned for verification?

Also - while the DT pass includes BRB and RE trains from Munich to Salzburg, does it work for local transit within Salzburg (which, obviously, is not in Germany)?

Thanks in advance for your help.

It is not valid within Salzburg.

Just show the thing when asked. No validation, just board. Not sure how it's coded, QR I imagine.

It is QR code. Why purchased via a third party? We bought it directly at MVV app where you can enter an US address.

You can buy the ticket today, no need to wait until 1 SEP. They ask you for the start date when you purchase.

If you have the ticket, and it needs to show in the DB app, you just pull that out when you are asked. You may not be asked on any given trip, but if you are asked you must show the ticket or expect to be escorted off the train, and you will receive a notice of a fine in the mail (because they will get your ID and address). You may also get an option to buy the ticket while on the train, but that also includes a fine.

The Deutschland Ticket does cover all the Ubahn and Sbahn trains, busses, tram lines, and some ferries. Everywhere in Germany.

It is a QRE Code. It is linked to your name. You may be required to show your passport along with the ticket.

It does not cover local transit outside Germany. For that you need to buy a local trip ticket or day pass.

If you have a DT, you can also set the DB app to apply that discount to any IC/ICE tickets you have to buy if your route has both types of trains.

and it needs to show in the DB app,

Overseas visitors cannot purchase the DT via the DB app because DB only accepts direct debit payments, which are only available to EU citizens. My preference for an app that accepts credit cards or PayPal would be either that of the VRM transport association (speaks English, allows multiple ticket purchases, and allows easy cancellation in the app) or HVV Switch(Hamburg) or MVGo (Munich).

Russ is correct. The pass is only good on local transport within Germany, although you can, of course, use the ticket to travel to and from specific cities/towns outside Germany. If you visit this website, it has a list of all countries/cities you can travel to with the D-ticket, including places in Belgium, Denmark, Austria, France, Poland, Luxembourg, Netherlands, Switzerland and Czechia.

Fritz, my experience last summer with family is such that, having purchased their Deutschland Ticket, we could get it to show on the DB app once they had that on their phones, even though it was not purchased via that app. This makes it handy to use that app to calculate route costs when part of the trip is covered by that ticket and another portion is not.

@KGC, as far as I know, you can only load tickets into the DB Navigator that were purchased from DB, i.e., via the website or at the ticket counter. Was that perhaps the case for you? Or do you know a trick for loading “foreign” tickets that you would be willing to share with us? I just searched to see if anything had changed recently, but couldn't find anything. BTW, to calculate travel costs, DB Navigator provides a “I have a DT” button that works regardless of whether a DT is loaded into the app or not.
