Oh no. ☹ We were hoping to take a day trip from Basel to Freiburg later this week.

@Carrie: The strike should begin this week at 2 am Thursday and will end at 2 am next Tuesday. During this period DB will be attempting to keep 1/4 of its long-distance train trips on offer, 40% of its local/regional trains. By 2 pm tomorrow German Time, DB expects to announce which lines will be served and which connections will be replaced with buses. If the procedures and policies during this strike are similar to those of previous strikes, there will likely be a replacement schedule posted at platforms and in lobbies in all the stations, and you will probably be able to use saver fare tickets on any trains on your travel date for your stated travel segment.

Russ, thanks so much for the info. Sounds like we might still be able to go to Freiburg to try the lange rote. We arrive in Basel Sept. 3 and leave Sept. 7. So, was looking at Freiburg for Sept. 4, Saturday, or Sept. 6, Monday, as the market is closed on Sundays. I’ll keep checking the train schedules.

It does not affect the U-Bahns, buses, or trams. My experience with the other strikes is that they may have one S-Bahn per hour running, sometimes more early in the morning.

For local transport, use www.rmv.de to find alternate routes.

Good luck. It is driving all of us crazy too.

In Berlin now and have had to scramble a bit on transportation. I consider the strike challenges part of living like a local. ;-)

I bet the Flix buses and Ryan Air are doing a booming business.
