Understanding the Deutschlandticket

My wife and I are visiting Germany and Austria (Salzburg) this months for approximately 2 weeks and we have subscribed to the Deutschlandticket. I understand that this ticket does not cover any high-speed trains (i.e. the IC types), but I want to make sure that we understand what is available to us. We purchased the tickets via the FahrPlaner App for Android.

For example, we are arriving in Munich via an IC train I had already purchased tickets for, but we are trying to connect to Salzburg for the final leg. I think that we can use the DT for travel on the hourly BRB RE5 train to Salzburg (I am also assuming I can use the DT to return to Munich on the outbound BRB RE5). Am I correct in that assumption? Also, do I need to make some sort of reservation, or can we just "show up" before the train leaves and just present the DT ticket on our phones?

If my assumption is incorrect, then what train line should I be looking to in getting to Salzburg that is covered under the DT?

Thank you all for any advice or confirmation!

Ross,

I can answer half your question and then expand on your question for my travel.

Your D-Ticket will get you from Munich to Freilassing at no additional cost to you. You just pick a time to get on the BRB RE5 and you are good to go. You present your D-Ticket on your phone. Some conductors will ask to see your Passport as as well.

To plan your travel on your D-Ticket you can use the DB app or website and select Mode of Transport: Local Transport Only. This will show you options that accept your D-Ticket.

Now, here is the part I don't know and was actually coming in to this forum to ask. I don't think the D-Ticket covers Freilassing, Germany to Salzburg, Austria. So how do you buy the "last mile"? Can DB sell you the Austrian portion? I could find no info on the DB site.

I am traveling from Kelheim to Salzburg and can exit the DB train in Freilassing, purchasing a ticket for and switching to the S-Bahn for my last leg. Since I have not yet booked my Salzburg hotel, I may pick the S-Bahn if it works better for getting to my hotel.

Thank you JKH,

Freilassing, eh? That was a bit unexpected but is certainly not insurmountable!

So maybe another train or a cab straight to the hotel across the border into Salzburg? Anything I should keep in mind, or watch out for... I wouldn't expect taxis from Freilassing would have any real difficulty taking us into Salzburg?

Does anyone have a suggestion for the least cumbersome way to finish the final miles?

Salzburg can be considered a German station for your Deutschland ticket in the same way that the Bayern Ticket and the German Railpass can. There are other stations outside Germany which can be traveled to as well similar ticket/passes. Schaffhausen in Switzerland, for example, is accessible with the Baden-Württemberg ticket, the Deutschland ticket...

Salzburg Hbf is both an ÖBB and a DB station, so the DT is valid between Freilassing and Salzburg Hbf. (but it's not valid for urban transport within Salzburg). Simply stay on the BRB train - there are no different tracks for the S-Bahn into Salzburg, both the BRB and the S-Bahn go into the Hbf using the same tracks.

absolutely no requirement to leave the train at Freilassing. The D-Ticket is valid as far as Salzburg.

Happy travels.

Oh, and it is valid on the trip back too.

Go to the Bahn website and put in Muenchen Hbf to Salzburg Hbf. You should probably change the date and time to sometime tomorrow morning since it will already be late in the evening or even tomorrow in Germany when you do this.

Click "Search". It will show you a bunch of connections between Munich and Salzburg. Find the first connection that says "BRB RE5" and click "Continue". It shows you fare possibilities. Click on "Show season tickets".

One of the possible fares under "Season Tickets" is the Deutschland-Ticket, so you know you can use it for this connection.

You can do this for other connections as well.
