Two or three nights in Cologne?

Hello,

I am currently housesitting in Amsterdam until Sept. 2, and will have two to three nights free, as the owner of the apartment I'm housesitting for will return for a couple of nights. I am thinking of spending two or three nights in Cologne in between house sits. Wondering if two or three nights are recommended? In looking at the Flix Bus schedule, it's possible to book a hotel for two nights and come back the evening of the third, rather than pay for another night's lodging, but happy to spend a third night if it's worth staying over.

Thanks in advance for your suggestions.

Hi AshleyMIA,

Thanks for your reply. I have plans to visit Ghent, Bruges and Brussels after leaving Amsterdam, so they're already in the mix. A friend recommended Cologne. Other than that, no special reason to visit other than looking for someplace easy to get to for two to three nights and that is potentially interesting. Open to other suggestions.

My sister and I (both WW2 history buffs) spent three nights there. It's a good place to visit and use as a home base. In Cologne, we visited the Cathedral and the Gestapo museum (gut wrenching and intense). We day tripped to Remagen and visited the Bridge at Remagen museum, enjoyed a river walk and a wonderful lunch. Another day, we took a train to Koblenz, then trained into the Mosel Valley to Moselkern. From there we hiked to Burg Eltz castle, which turned out to be one our trip highlights. I think you will find plenty of things to do in the area. I would go back.

Thanks again for your replies. I spent three nights in Cologne, and arrived late afternoon the first day. I enjoyed my time, with the highlight of my trip being a cruise down the Rhine.

Your three days sound well spent, pchvatal. I was already back in Amsterdam when I got your post. Will keep your suggestions in mind, should I be back in the area.
