Two nights in or near Frankfurt

I'm arriving in Frankfurt on Friday morning, September 25th. I have to be back for work on Sunday night, September 27th. Originally, I was going to visit some friends that live near Wurzburg, which I have visited on many occasions. But due to unforseen circumstances they cannot meet me. I have no idea what to do. Should I stay in Frankfurt and take a train somewhere? I have spent a day in Frankfurt many years ago but remember it as a large city. I have traveled a lot but I'm a bit older now and am traveling as a single gal. I've read many of the blogs about Heidelberg. Some like it, some don't. Is there another destination that someone might recommend?

Thank you in advance for your suggestions

I really enjoyed Frankfurt (some people do not like it...but I liked the mixed of the old and the new). I also enjoyed nearby Rüdesheim and Kronberg. Charming, charming! You may want to google these. Enjoy!

How about Strasbourg?
Little over 2 hours one-way on the train.

There are so many places it's hard to start. You could stay in Frankfurt and do a daytrip to one or more of the charming small towns around there. If Ms Jo sees this maybe she will chime in, she always has good advice for Frankfurt and surroundings. I loved her suggestion to go to Budingen, it's a great small town will much of it's old town walls still standing and many interesting things to see. It made a good half-day trip for me, only about an hour or less on the train from Frankfurt. I personally found plenty to see and do in Frankfurt for the other day and a half that I was there. You could also take a train from Frankfurt to somewhere on the Rhine for a couple of nights. I stayed in Bacharach and loved it, others will suggest Boppard, St Goar, or another of the small Rhine towns. I also have to say that I enjoyed Heidelberg very much and not sure why others don't except that not everybody likes the same places.

Mainz is a worthy day trip from Frankfurt too. You may even be pleasantly surprised by Frankfurt itself. I was.

I suggest you take the train to Boppard, a small old-world town on the Rhine, but the largest of the small towns there, with many dining and lodging options.
Boppard's market square
Bopppard, river walk
Boppard old town
Boppard, Gedeonseck cafe, short walk from top of chairlift
Boppard chairlift

Perfect timing for one of the Rhine River small-town wine festivals. Boppard has one that weekend. Wine and food stands, music, and FIREWORKS.

Perfect situation. Hotel rooms are pretty full but there are SINGLE rooms available - go on www.hotelscombined.com now to see the options... The Sonnenhof, where I've stayed previously and enjoyed, is available for 2 nights, but there are others that may suit you better. Make sure you get a place that's IN BOPPARD and not one of Boppard's hyphenated suburbs (Boppard-Bad Salzig, for example.)

There are direct Regional Express trains to Boppard from FRA's Regionalbahnhof station - the RE train takes 1.25 hours and costs €20.70 (ticket machine at the FRA station.)

Should you want to do an outing from Boppard, you can reach St. Goar (Rheinfels Castle) or Braubach (Marksburg) or Bacharach or Oberwesel easily from Boppard.
