We will be taking the RS Best of Munich, Salzburg and Vienna tour in late May. We (two women in our 60’s) will be arriving two days before the tour begins. I would love some recommendations of things we should see and do in that time frame. We love history, architecture and good food. I have read a few negative posts mentioning Neuschwanstein Castle and therefore we don’t feel the need to spend a whole day traveling to see it. Thank you in advance, this community has been very helpful in our other trips.
Take a look at Nymphenburg Palace. https://schloss-nymphenburg.de/englisch/palace/ It was about a half hour bus ride from Munich city center. We loved it.
The RS guidebook has a walking tour of Munich that I highly recommend. Make sure to go to the Viktualienmarkt , open air market. Closed Sundays. We did the Residenz. Quite interesting tho it goes on and on and on.
I don't love beer, but I enjoyed the beer halls. My favorite was by the Marienplatz, Ausgustiner. There is another Augustiner, by the train station. That one has outdoor service and games, etc. It was also fun to go the the Hofbrauhaus. There was music, and its a fun place to people watch.
Also, consider the Englischer Garten.
And make sure to see the Rathaus-Glockenspiel, there's a little "show" at 11 and 12.
Nymphenburg palace, Dachau concentration camp can easily be done by public transportation, buy a day pass with correct zones. The Residence requires at least 3 hours so you may want to do it on your own, same as Documentation Center.
You will find a wealth of suggestions either here: https://www.ricksteves.com/europe/germany/munich in the At a Glance section; or in his (or any other reliable) Germany guidebook.
Nymphenberg Palace gets another vote here! I have been to both it and Neuschwanstein and found Nymphenberg to be the far better experience for me. We used the tram right next to the Central Station and it was only about 15 minutes. Citymapper App is your friend.
