Longer itinerary….three nights between these two spots. Two nights in which, Erfurt or Limburg? If the latter, we plan to canoe on the Lahn for an afternoon.
Thanks!

There is much more to Erfurt than the dark tales of Martin Luther --
for instance, after the Berlin Wall fell and the gov't was dissolving,
people noticed smoke in the air over the STASI HQ in Erfurt,
and they mobbed the building to try to prevent them from burning
the records of their surveillance activities, esp. the collaborators' lists.
The bigger HQ in Berlin learned their lesson from this, and there and other records archives they instead pulped the records or shredded them, or both, to avoid any telltale smoke from burning them.
Germany has so many interesting stories to discover when you get off the beaten track!
I know too less about Limburg - only was driving A3 between Frankfurt and Bonn and passing it.
I know that Erfurt and surrounding has a lot of places and stories to explore. One was given already. Another one is Erfurt Blue.
Also on the way you will find many interesting place, e. g. famous Wartburg or the ruins of Burg Gleiberg with a fantastic view. Wetzlar has a remarkable old town with dome and is somehow touristically undervalued.
I am the opposite, have never been to Erfurt, but have been to Limburg dozens of times.
It has beautiful, half-timbered buildings, (look for the one that has the 7 vices on it) a wonderful, old cathedral (I believe 1200s?), and just a cool old town filled with interesting small stores. I would love to stay here for a weekend. Lots of good restaurants and the one down by the river is beautiful. If you need any trachten, they actually have a large store here.
We stayed 3 nights in Limburg. We loved it
We enjoyed our 3 days in Erfurt! Gorgeous buildings, nice strolling streets. But the reason we went was for the Topf and Sons Memorial. The factory there made the ovens for the gas chambers. It’s a factory with a terrible history but it’s fascinating to wander because the displays take a critical look at the Topf and Sons owners’ attempts to plead ignorance about their complicity with the Nazis. It’s a well-done museum, very uncrowded, and extremely educational.

I think we can sum it up to: spend 6 days, 3 in Erfurt and 3 in Limburg. ;-)
