Two-Country Rail Pass

I'm trying to price out the two-country rail pass (Germany and Switzerland) that is discussed in the travel book but can't seem to get there, either through the Rick Steve's website or the Deutsche Bahn website. Lot's of discussion but no actual answers. Any help would be appreciated.

Maybe the 2-country passes are no longer sold? I cannot find them on this website either.

But that is OK, as the 2-country pass did not work as well within Switzerland as a Swiss Pass (less coverage, particularly for the private railways and mountain lifts). And a pass is generally not recommended for Germany, where there are deals such as the Bayern Ticket for regional trains and Sparpreis discounted tickets for the Intercity trains (purchased in advance on Bahn.de).

How long will you be in Switzerland and what do you plan to do there? People here can help you decide if a Swiss Pass of some sort would be useful, as well as recommend one appropriate for your needs.

Be sure, though, that the 2-country pass will save you money. Many visitors find some sort of pass or the half-fare card useful for Switzerland, but there are fabulous regional day-tickets available in Germany that might be more cost-effective for that part of you trip. Those tickets needn't be purchased in advance.

Those passes are history.

You should provide your travel legs within Germany and within Switzerland - and from one country into the next - if you would like some ticketing/pass advice from those who have gone before you. Passenger info and dates will help also.

You can begin looking up costs and routings for individual travel legs within Germany - and between Germany and Switzerland - at this German Railways page:

https://reiseauskunft.bahn.de//bin/query.exe/en

You can travel as the Europeans do - with tickets, not overpriced rail passes.

Sample fares:

Munich > Zurich for €19.80 each including reservation (advance-purchase sale fare)
Munich > Nuremberg (or Salzburg - or Füssen - or Garmisch-Partenkirchen - or any other Bavarian destination) > Munich day trip for 2 adults and 2 kids = €32 (day pass on regional trains)

If you have several LONG journeys within Germany, a German Rail Pass may be suitable. It just depends. The GRP is one of the better rail pass values.

As I also emailed your this morning: Two-country rail passes were discontinued last January. It may make sense for your route to buy separate German and Swiss passes, or just one pass and a ticket or two on the other side. Otherwise, the pass that covers more than one country is the Eurail Global pass, which should be similar in same price to the old two-country option, especially with the current discount for purchase by Dec. 30.

I find that senior Global Pass 2nd class 15 days/2 months offers the best deal, since it covers the EuroStar Paris to London, even more of an incentive; if bought prior to 12/31/19 another 10% reduction. That Global Pass covers Finland to Holland, Switzerland and Germany, etc, etc, ...Amsterdam to Budapest.

You do not need a 2-country pass for Germany and Switzerland unless you just want to waste money. Get yourself a Swiss Pass or a Half Fare Card for Switzerland. And above all...do NOT fall for that Eurail Pass.
