Trip to Neuschwanstein Castle - Bayern Ticket

Our family of 4 will be visiting Munich in a couple of weeks for the Christmas Markets. We are going to visit Neuschwanstein Castle and Hohenschwangau Castle. We have a tour of Hohenschwangau Castle booked for 11am. Because of this we have to leave Munich before 9am and can't use the Bayern Ticket, except on the return trip.

I purchased our train tickets from DB and they say that it only covers the train portion of the trip, but it doesn't tell you how to purchase the bus tickets for the final leg of the trip. Is there a way to do this online, or at least before we arrive in Fussen?

For our return trip, we have two bus trips and then two train trips. When I was purchasing this whole trip, DB offered the Bayern Ticket for the return trip; however, it still says that the ticket is only good for the train portion. I had thought that the Bayern Ticket covered buses as well.

We are not at all familiar with public transportation, so we have a steep learning curve to overcome. I appreciate any help you can provide us. Thanks in advance!

The Bayern ticket 9am restriction is only for weekdays. You CAN use the Bayern ticket on a weekday for most of the first leg since it is valid from 9 am, and since the 8:41 departure from Munich stops in Geltendorf at 9:07. So all you need to buy now are MVV tickets for the 8:41 > 9:07 trip to Geltendorf, which is too early for Bayern Ticket travel on weekdays..

This ticket can be bought at the station. The Bayern Ticket could also be bought at the station, but that's water under the bridge now. The Bayern Ticket will cover the bus trip from Füssen to the Neuschwanstein stop.

If you are thinking about buying any more tickets online, come to the forum first for advice. Advance purchase is usually disadvantageous for short day trips from Munich.

Thank you for your replies. After doing quite a bit of research it looks like I can take a regional train to Buchloe and then switch trains and go to Fussen. That would get me there around 9:42am, so after that the bus to the castles would be covered by my Bayern ticket. Then my return trip would be completely covered by the Bayern ticket as well. I know this will get easier the more I do it. Thanks for your help.

OK, since you did not provide one, we are not using the same travel date, which impacts travel times.

It seems you intend to use this schedule:

7:39 lv Munich
8:24 ar Buchloe
8:30 lv Buchloe
9:42 ar Füssen

It is not completely clear to me what kind of tickets you have already bought. Let's say you have a Bayern Ticket for your group in hand.
The Bayern Ticket will naturally be valid for the return trip by regional train. But it will also be valid for PART of the journey to Füssen.

The BRB train for Buchloe > Füssen has a stop in Marktoberdorf between 8:59 and 9:01. When your train leaves Marktoberdorf station at 9:01, YOUR BAYERN TICKET BECOMES VALID. This means you do not have to purchase tickets from Munich > Füssen (€35.30 per adult for example) but instead for Munich > Marktoberdorf (€28.50) - which saves you €14 (for 2 adults) or perhaps more on this now somewhat pricey outing.

Regional train tickets can be bought at the station on the day of travel. You can buy in advance, but you are not buying a seat - only passage - so seating depends on what sort of crowding exists on the train you are boarding. Advance purchase has no serious benefit.
