I will be in Rome the week of May 2nd for a week (business trip). My outbound flight is in Munich a week after. I am trying to figure out if I should head straight to Munich after a week in Rome or do some side trips. I am thinking of spending3 days in Barcelona but not sure if I should fly or take the rail. Is this even doable. If not Barcelona what other side trip should I consider without wasting too much time on airports or train stations. If I just do Munich can I take day trips to Frankfurt ? Any advice would be appreciated.
Rome to Barcelona is too far for the train. You must fly. Lots of low cost airlines on this route as well which will save you time and money. The train ride from Munich to Frankfurt is over 3 hours. Not sure that is a day trip I would want to do.
Thanks Emily. I checked airlines like Ryanair and Vueling which are both low cost airlines but really bad reviews which scares me. What day trips can I do from Munich.? I plan booking a hotel in the city centre and make that my starting point. At first I wanted to go to Berlin for 3 days ( travelling time included). But one is going South and other North so I changed my mind. Would 5 days in Munich a bit too much if I just decide to stay in Munich?
RyanAir is not most people's favorite airline, but Vueling and EasyJet tend to rate higher and we use them frequently; see also www.skyscanner.com. From Munich by direct train, you can easily reach Nuernberg (1 hour), Salzburg (1.75 hours), or Fuessen (2 hours, for castles). How to Look Up Train Schedules and Routes Online](http://www.ricksteves.com/travel-tips/transportation/trains/online-schedules) gives you the DB train schedule link and tips for using it. Around Munich, museums, BMW factory tour (reserve ahead), and Dachau Concentration Camp memorial are all served by local transport. Five days in Munich is not too much if you will side trip from there. There are hotels very conveniently located to the train station.
