Trier and the roman ruins

We will be taking part in the Germany, Switzerland, and Austria trip and are trying to decide if we want an extra day in Trier before the tour begins. How much of the Roman Ruins do we see on the tour (just the Porta Nigra Gate or the baths and other areas too)? Would it be worth it to go early for a more in depth tour of the ruins? And finally! Are there any other interesting places in Trier, not included in the tour, that would justify the extra day? Thank you!

Bekah, if you go to "Our Tours" over on the left of this page and then click on Germany, then the GAS tour, scroll down and you'll find "Pre-Tour". There are suggestions on what to do and see that the tour won't cover while you're getting over jet lag.

Trier is one of my favorite cities in Germany. The Archeological Museum is an absolute must, and houses some of the best artifacts from Neanderthal to Celtic to Roman times. People are still finding artifacts in their basements, in fact bags of gold coins were recently discovered during the construction of a building. Also, there is a very worthwhile museum behind the Church that has reconstructed Roman tile murals destroyed by bombings during the war, as well as other interesting artifacts. I found the time spent in these two places worth more than the Basilica or baths.

Bekah on our GAS tour, the Porta Nigra was all we had time to see of Roman ruins as part of the tour. Is this the start of your tour? You should always come at least one day early to help adjust to jet lag, etc. We came one day early, but stayed a night in Bacharach on the Rhine (about half way between Frankfurt and Trier) and we think that we enjoyed that more than we would have of an extra day in Trier.

We are actually flying into Amsterdam and spending a few days there prior to arriving in Trier. We are currently trying to decide if we want an extra day in Trier to look at the Archeological Museum and to get a more in depth tour of the roman ruins (and a good night sleep) before beginning the tour proper. Any recommendations would be greatly appreciated!
