Traveling with Medical Treatments

I have a group asking questions about traveling with prescriptions. I cannot find anything on the airlines website. What are the can do vs. cannot do? If a person uses cannabis for their medical issues, how do they travel to Germany with this in mind?

Regular prescriptions are fine - just make sure you carry some documentation showing the prescriptions are valid (pill bottle, copy of Rx, photo of Rx, etc.

However cannabis is a whole different ball game. There are many countries in Europe that allow it, but the US federal government does not, so you risk something there. Plus even for countries that allow it in the EU, you may need to jump through some hurdles. I would suggest that someone in your group do extensive research for the countries you will be visiting.

And quite frankly, with all due respect to people here, I would not rely on anyone's word for it. The risks are too great. Personally I would not risk it.

Contact the nearest German Consulate and find out if/how it can be done

This is a bit dated but it may answer some of your questions......

It appears that some research and work will be required, but it may be more trouble than it's worth. Some airlines may also have a problem with cannabis products. The last part of that article provides a good summary....

"If you have to travel with cannabis for medical reasons, the safest option is to buy your weed after arrival, not before. As previously stated, transporting cannabis from one country to another is a much more serious crime than possession, and applying to transport it legally is an arduous and time-consuming process. To avoid the risk, travel to cannabis-friendly countries during your visit to Europe, and get what you need upon arrival."

Remember this......while the state may allow cannabis for medical reasons, the Federal Government does not. It is illegal to transport marijuana across state lines even if those states allow it. It is illegal to bring marijuana into the country. If TSA searches a bag and finds marijuana they will summon the police. Flying comes under Federal law, not state.

For Germany, you need to get a permit to bring medical purpose marijuana into the country.

For all other prescriptions, as long as they are legitimate prescriptions, they can bring them
