Traveling to Fussen area

We will be in the Fussen area for two nights in May and have several questions: 1) Should we stay at a hotel in the town of Fussen or one just outside? We’d like to stay a few miles away with scenic views but have heard parking is limited in Fussen (making it hard for us to go into town); and 2) We definitely want to tour Neuschwanstein but are trying to decide if we should also do a tour of either Linderhof or Hohenschwangau … or just drive by them and see the outside areas. We’d appreciate any thoughts or tips you’d like to share! — JU

Hello JU I hope I can answer your questions.

I would stay at lake Hopfen near Füssen. When you choose a hotel at the waterfront you will have a scenic view. The street between the lake and the Hotel was never an issue for me. Spent several nights already at Hotel Geiger but the others might be ok as well.

I took this photo during my last trip to lake Hopfen. This is directly at the lake but with a hotel room looking at the waterfront your view will be the same. https://flic.kr/p/2mboXDr

From Hopfen am See you can take a bus to Füssen. Did this already and it worked great.

The only hotel in Füssen I can recommend is Hotel Sommer - directly located at lake Forggen. A hotel with a nice little Spa area and no issue to park the car.
In March I will be visiting the hotel again to relax some days :-)

I would do Linderhof and Hohenschwangau. Neuschwanstein I would only check from outside. OK to go up to the Marien-bridge but inside the castle I would skip. Maybe the Pöllat-gorge is open and you can hike up taking that way. Needs to be checked shortly before.

Go inside Neuschwanstein. Don’t just drive those places. The hotel I stayed at was not in Fussen, but out closer to the castles. It’s closed now but was an easy walk into Fussen. With a car I would probably stay out of town

I like Hotel Restaurant Helmerhof in Schwangau. You can see Neuschwanstein in the distance from some of their balcony. I first learned of this hotel years ago from a German TV program that focuses on food. I always recommend a walk around the Schwansee. You can get distance views from both castles there. With time I also recommend a hike up to Kalvarienberg from Füssen.

in 2019 we stayed in Füssen at Hotel Ruchti. It was near the river and a nice park. The thing I remember most was the excellent restaurant in the hotel - wonderful sausages, kraut, & schnitzel. The downside is that the drive to Neuschwanstein is about an hour and a half.

We stayed two times a while ago in Fuessen at the Hotel zum Hechten. They have free parking behind the hotel and the front of the hotel opens on to the old town pedestrian zone. We found it very convenient. The restaurant in the hotel was very good also.

The drive from Fuessen to Neuschwanstein is maybe 10 minutes.

After touring Neuschwanstein, I’d be more inclined to tour Linderhof. It’s pretty over the top inside and the grounds are beautiful.

@JU

Oh the pressure is high now :-) Hope you like it and hopefully it was still possible to book a room with a balcony and waterfront view.
