I have a few (4) days from when I arrive in Munich to when I am meeting a friend in Amsterdam and trying to put together the most interesting, albeit brief, itinerary.....and would love suggestions....was thinking of taking the train to Cologne but is there a town closer to Munich that I should visit before I get to Cologne? My first time traveling in Germany (except for when I was a child) Thank you!
Nuremberg Bamberg are coherent options; you may even find them like I did better experiences than over rated Munich;
Frankfurt is ok if you are interested in large red light districts.
Are you planning on taking the train up to Amsterdam and seeing sights along the way, or are you going to fly to Amsterdam from Munich?
Cologne is not a place I'd suggest leaving Munich for. There's a ton of the most scenic and interesting stuff to do in/around Munich that can EASILY occupy 4 days. I used to believe like the above poster that Munich was overrated, but a lot of it's charms are getting out of the relatively small tourist center. It also helps to have nice weather, a lot of what makes Munich special is it's biergartens and public spaces.
Frankfurt has a lot more than just a red light district; in fact, if it weren't for Rick's description, I wouldn't have even known about the red light district. There's plenty of good museums, the lively Sachsenhausen area, the pretty Westend, interesting Jewish history, and a very dynamic and multicultural vibe. However, if you are looking for "Olde Europe," you'll hate it. After the war, cities had to decide how to rebuild. Munich chose to rebuild as it was before the war; Frankfurt chose to start over and go modern.
Do look into Nuremberg; it has a pretty center as well as the Nazi rally grounds and the excellent Dokuzentrum outside the center (an easy tram ride away).
Yes, thank you for these suggestions. Nuremburg was also a place I wanted to visit so I will plan to stop there as well.
