Traveling from Koblenz to Nurburgring?

Hello-
We will be traveling from Paris to Bacharach, Germany via Koblenz. In researching I saw that the Nurburgring is approximately 45 minutes away from Koblenz by car. I am thinking about adding a night and spending it in Koblenz then touring the Nurburgring. My son is a huge motorhead and would love it before going on to Bacharach.
What is the most realistic way for us to get to the Nurburgring from Koblenz? I was considering a rental car (have never driven in Europe). I realize train/bus/cab will take longer, but may be a smarter way to go?
Thank you!

We rented a car because of time more than distance. My husband did 8 laps on the Nordschleife. Not in our rental car, but in a specially prepared rental car just for the track. We did not explore the Grand Prix track. You can get rides for either. It's not cheap, but well worth the money.

In case you haven't already explored the website, here's the link: http://www.nuerburgring.de/en/home.html. And this is the link for the tourist rides: http://www.nuerburgring.de/en/drives-fun/drives/touristenfahrten.html.

You can stay at a hotel at the track or very close. This is the link for that: http://www.nuerburgring.de/en/tours-trips/accomodations/hotels-directly-to-the-racetrack.html.

We spent one night in Koblenz (came up the river from Bingen by ferry), rented a car there, spent 2 nights at the track (with side trips to Burg Eltz and to do laundry) and returned the car to Koblenz. That was back in 2009. Explore the website thoroughly. There may be better local transportation now, especially if you only want to go to the track(s).

You're not saving that much time by driving from Koblenz vs. Bacharach if you drive directly to the nearest Autobahn access point, so unless you want to see Koblenz specifically, there's not much point in changing hotels for just one night.

Edit....oh, I see that you're intend to go to Bacharach after Nürburgring. In that case, just using Koblenz as your base may make more sense. I know I'm going against Ricknik dogma here, but I find Bacharach a little over-praised by the Blue Book, and Koblenz somewhat unjustly maligned.
