Travel warning: Don't book Airberlin - Avoid rail between Frankfurt and Basel

You've probably heard that Airberlin has filed for bankruptcy and is now being ripped apart and sold in pieces. The German government was allowed to keep operations up until mid-November by granting a loan, however, that money is most likely going to be used-up way before that. The airline will be grounded soon. If you already have a ticket for later than November you will lose your money unless you can rebook to a date within the next 6 weeks and fly it off. Also Airberlin Topbonus miles have become worthless.

Deutsche Bahn had a construction site accident along the Frankfurt-Basel route and will not be able to operate any rail traffic between Baden-Baden and Rastatt until October 7th. If you must use this route your train will end in one of the two cities and a bus will take you to the other where you have to board a new train. You can avoid this by booking the route via Zurich and Stuttgart rather than Basel via Karlsruhe or Mannheim...

Except Zürich - Stuttgart is also out because of planned re-building. Until 9th Septembert I think, but they are trying to get it back sooner and postpone any work not already started.

Details from the DB website in German: https://www.bahn.de/p/view/home/info/sonderkommunikation-rastatt.shtml?dbkanal_007=L01_S01_D001_KIN0001_blitzbox-rastatt-2017-08-13_LZ01
Shorter explanation in English: https://www.bahn.com/en/view/home/help/line-closure-raststatt.shtml?dbkanal_007=L14_S02_D002_KIN0063_INT-_STRECKENSTOERUNG-Teaser_LZ01

Between Basel and Rastatt a shuttle service is running, not to the normal timetable - so check.

Also the section Horb - Tübingen is being used by diverted freight trains (normally 200 per day go through Rastatt), some passenger trains are replaced by buses.
