Travel to Germany and ??? late September and October 2026

My husband and I would like to be in Munich the last weekend of Octoberfest Oct. 3-4. We can leave the United States September 28, 29th. We have 2-3 weeks to travel and would like to visit Munich, Berlin, Venice, Rovinj, and if possible Rome. Any suggestions about order or other places appreciated. We look forward to using trains, ferries other modes of transpiration. Berlin and Munich are non negotiable. Thanks for any help.

Well I would definitely go with 3 weeks if at all possible and I would also book a multi-city flight which means that you fly into one city and then fly home from another. They're usually no more expensive than a round trip ticket and even if they are, you usually save because you are eliminating the time and cost of getting back to your original city.

For example you would fly into Berlin at the start of your trip, spend your time there, then take the train to Munich in time for Octoberfest. After that, train or fly to Rovinj in Croatia, then go to Venice and lastly wind up in Rome where you would fly home at the end of your trip. That's probably the most direct route I've given you as you're just pretty much heading down in a straight(ish) line. That would also work out weather-wise since October can get chilly and you're heading south to (hopefully) warmer climates.

With three weeks and five cities, you would have around 4 nights to spend in each city, which is a decent amount of time to see these places. If you need to go with less time, I would probably eliminate at least one of those cities as you'd be rushing too much.

You have selected locations that are quite some distance apart. You will spend most of a day travelling each time you change locations. I'd recommend getting multicity flight tickets, flying into Berlin and home from Rome. Train from Berlin to Munich. Then go to Rovinj by flying to Trieste then a bus to Rovinj. Ferry from Rovinj to Venice. Train from Venice to Rome.

Berlin first, then head south to Munich for Oktoberfest. After Munich, continue south into Venice, and from there Rovinj by ferry. Rome fits best at the end since it’s easy to fly home from there.

You fly from Berlin to Munich and from Venice to Rome. Don't waste entire days trying to take the trains between those locations.

That is a lot of travel between all those places.
Croatia is nice, but my favorite places are Split and Dubrovnik, which you don't list. Suggest skipping Rovinj.
Berlin area, you need 4-5 days. Are you considering Dresden for a day, between Berlin and Munich? Also, Nuremberg.

We lived in Augsburg (50 miles west of Munich) and did the Oktoberfest three times. It is quite an experience. I recommend that you visit more than one tent. Loved the Spatenbrau tent. Go about lunch time and eat some roast chicken. It is not as crowded earlier in the day.
Munich is great, you should try to take in Salzburg and/or Garmish/Fussen on you way to Venice.
The highspeed train from Venice to Rome (stops in Florence) is fast and better than flying.
Still, Rome deserves 5 full days, Venice 3 days.
