Travel to and from Dolomites

I have received very helpful information from this forum but want to post another question. We are staying in Berchtesgaden for 4 nights and then driving to Sexton Italy to hike the Dolomites. What driving route would you take and are there any interesting stops along the way?

On the return we will be driving from Ortisei to the Munich airport. We will be staying at the airport for a 0900 flight the next day. What driving route on the way back would you take and is there any interesting sites/towns along the way? We will be returning the car at the airport and are content to just "crash" when we get there so don't mind a stop on the return.
Thoughts?

If the high road is open at the time of your visit, I would definitely choose to drive via Zell am See and the Großglockner high alpine road, then Lienz.
If not, then go via Kitzbühel and the Felbertauern tunnel (not to be confused with the Tauern tunnel).

On the way to Munich, I would use the Brenner Autobahn to Innsbruck, then head to See field, Mittelwald and drive along Walchensee where you could stop for a swim.

Thank-you Balso. We are traveling June 23 to the Dolomites and back to Munich airport on July 1 so I would think the road should be open by then.

Yes, definitely!
It costs 40€ to drive that road, which isn't cheap, but worth it unless it is raining. And you can take your time; once you are on the other side you are 1:45 hrs away from Sexten, on a road that is very easy for the last stretch after Lienz.
