Hi Y'all,
My wife and I are planning a trip to Germany in September 2022. After a guided tour through Bavaria we'd like to take a tour on our own, using German Rail to travel from Munich to Frankfurt, while also visiting friends in Fulda. We hope to have 3 to 4 days for this, and then to fly out of Frankfurt.
Recommendations please.
You can take a direct train from Munich to Nürnberg (1h 15m) for a night or two before continuing on to Fulda (1h 30m by direct train). There’s also a direct train from Fulda to FRA Frankfurt Airport (1h 15m).
Does your 3-4 days include your stop in Fulda? And is Fulda an overnight visit? How many nights between your departure from Munich and your flight from Frankfurt?
Assuming you have 4 nights, I would recommend:
Munich to Rothenburg ob der Tauber. Stay 2 nights. Get up early one morning (before 7) and explore the town while it’s empty. Take the Nightwatchman’s Tour. Walk the walls.
Train to Fulda for 1 night.
Train to Frankfurt for 1 night. Fly home.
If you flight is later in the day, it looks like you can take a direct train from Fulda to the airport in under 1.5 hrs, so could add another night in Rothenburg or Fulda.
September 2022 is a long ways off; plenty could change in the interim. Today, I see a 1H12min ICE connection from Fulda to FRA Flughafen Fernbahnhof. Non-refundable, advance purchase SparPreis fares are starting at €17,90/P.. If you are flying Lufthansa, you can get a totally flexible ticket from Fulda to the airport, called Rail 'n Fly, when booking your air ticket for about €33/P. More than the SparPreis, but valid on any train the day you leave (or the day before).
