From the airport to the city centre it is best to take the suburban train. You have the choice between two lines: the S1 and the S8, both taking some 45 mins. Which one is the most practical depends on your hotel. For the four of you a group ticket costs around EUR 25. Buy ticket at the counter.
For Munich to Salzburg (and vice versa) you can best take the hourly Meridian train, taking 1h45min. A so-called Bayern Ticket for the four of you costs EUR 43 (on weekdays only on trains leaving after 09.00). Ticket can be bought at the station. Reservation is possible, but not mandatory.
For schedules see the website of the German railways.

Hotels are difficult to recommend without knowing your budget per night. Also, are you 4 adults or are there children? A pool is a asking a lot unless your budget is high.

That's very helpful thank you. I think we will try and stay in Munich city centre. There r 3 adults and 1 child aged 17 so we will need 2 twin rooms or 1 double and 1 twin. The pool is not a necessity but would be nice. We will also need a hotel in Salzburg for 2 nights near to the arena.

It doesn't matter from where the train leaves after 9 AM. You can only use it on the train after 9 AM. If the train leaves leaves Munich Hbf before 9 AM, you can use a Bayern-Ticket on the train after 9 AM, as long as you have ticket coverage up till 9 AM.

True, tickets can be bought at the station, and that is the preferable way.

The Bayern-Ticket is only valid on regional trains. Reservations on regional trains are not possible.

Thank you. I will not book the trains on advance. We arrive after 9.00am so the ticket for up to 5 people sounds very good value for money. We r staying overnight in Munich on the first night. Please can you tell me in which area to look at hotels. Is the city centre a good idea to stay? If we stay in the city centre would I still need to get the S8 metro to the centre? We would be travelling to the main train station the following Morning to go to Salzburg. Which metro will that be please?

For that one night I would have convenience as the main consideration, and take a hotel near the central station (Hauptbahnhof). There is a wide choice of hotels with 5 mins walking.
From the airport you can take both the S1 and the S8 to the central station. From the station area to the city centre (Marienplatz) is a 15-mins walk.

If you stay in the center you can take any S-Bahn running through the tunnel from the main station (Hauptbahnhof) to Munich East (Ostbahnhof) and vv (S 1 / 2 / 3 / 4 / 6 / 7 / 8). All trains stop at Karlsplatz/Stachus, Marienplatz, Isartor, and Rosenheimer Platz. If you want to catch the Meridian to Salzburg there is no need to go back to the main station. Depending on the location of your hotel it may be easier to go to Munich East and transfer to the Meridian there. Your Bayern Ticket is valid on any S-Bahn train.

Note that for the Salzburg-to-Munich return trip, if buying in Salzburg you need to buy the ticket from a DB (Deutsche Bahn -- German train line) ticket machine, not ÖBB (Austrian train line) machine. They are different colors (one is yellow, the other red) Also, if you go up to the DB ticket counter there is an extra €2 handling fee.

Bayern ticket also includes S-bahn (metro) and bus tickets in Munich (but not the extra cost to the airport) during the time the ticket is valid.

Our plans have changed now. We r staying in Salzburg for the 3 nights and not staying in Munich overnight now so will need to get train tickets from Munich airport to train station then to Salzburg. And return 3 days later. Should I buy return train tickets or buy each way?

mandy072: Your two journeys from MUC to Salzburg and back are each covered by the Bayern Ticket Day pass - you need one for each direction. You do NOT need to pre-purchase this ticket. Just buy it at the airport train station for Day 1, and another one at the Salzburg station on the day you return.

tonfromleiden and Lee explained the ticket earlier. You can read details at this page as well:

http://www.munich-touristinfo.de/Bavaria-Ticket.htm

You can find train schedules for the Bayern Ticket at the DB itinerary search page.

https://reiseauskunft.bahn.de//bin/query.exe/en

Use Munich Airport T for one station and Salzburg Hbf for the other. Be sure to check the "only local transport" box to find schedules for the regional trains (the only ones that are good with the Bayern Ticket.) Once the schedules pop up, click on "to offer selection" - if the Bayern ticket is possible, you will see that in the results.

You don't need to buy that Munich Airport to Salzburg ticket in advance, but it is one thing less to worry about when arriving in Munich, probably jet-lagged. The ordering process on the Deutsche Bahn website is straightforward. Payment is by credit card and you get an e-mailed pdf for printing at home.
