My niece and I are arriving at the Munich (MUC) airport at 10:40 pm (22:40) on a Sunday. I'm wondering what the best way to get to our hotel which is a 10 minute walk from Marienplatz? I don't know how late trains run and if they are safe late at night or if a taxi is economical.
Funny, I'm just doing this research for myself right now.
My hotel, also close to Marienplatz, says that it is a 45 minute taxi ride and will cost 70 euros.
The train says it will take 43 minutes to get to Marienplatz station. Plus some walking after that.
If I were you I wouldnt try to do that after dark the first night you're there but thats just me.
I am a little nervous about taking the train at night in an unfamiliar city, but $70 euros seems like a lot.
Spent 2 weeks in the same area in 2013, never felt unsafe at any time. Heading back next month! I would take the train to the main train station and take a taxi from there of you feel unsure.
The Sbahn run about every 20 minutes (take either S1 or S8) until 1:24 in the morning. A single ticket is 10.80Euros. Munich is a safe city. You could always take the same Sbahns to the train station and catch a cab to the hotel at great savings compared to taking one from the airport. Gary

The same train that goes to the Hbf (main train station) goes on to Marienplatz (one, the S8, acturally stops in Marienplatz before getting to the main station. I've walked around Munich at night; never had a worry.
I guess I was thinking after a very long flight, not knowing where you're going would be even harder at night. I am glad to hear that we should feel safe. :)
Hi Deni-
agree with Judy and Gary. Sbahn from airport to Hbf (main train station) and then taxi to hotel. Taxi stand was just outside of the station on the north side (right as you face the main tracks on the ground floor) last fall. ESPECIALLY if you don't know the exact streets to get to your hotel and it is dark....
Have a great trip!!!
PS- if your plane is late the Sbahn might be closed and you will be forced to take a taxi...
The S-Bahn runs from the airport to the Hauptbahnhof, albeit on a reduced schedule, until 1:20. S-Bahns leave the airport at midnight, seven min after midnight, 20 min after, 40 min after, then 20 min after 1 am. Service resumes at 4 am.
The train (S8 or S1) are really easy to catch -- just out of the airport and down the escalator. Once I discovered how simple it was to take, I was kind of embarrassed I had bothered with the pricey taxi on my prior visit.
I agree with the suggestion of going to the main station (Hauptbanhof) and getting taxi from there. After a long flight and being tired, the Marienplatz area can be a bit confusing at night (lots of small side streets and courtyards) so I wouldn't try and find your hotel from that stop even if it would save a few euros on the taxi from the train station.
Thanks so much for the replies. All the details are great and make me feel better about getting to the hotel. We will definitely take the train and decide about a taxi or walking when we get off.
If you do get off in Marienplatz, make sure you study the Munich map (Google) very carefully. Sometimes the street name changes every block, even though on a continuous street. So make sure you know the various names of the street you are looking for. Example, Eisenmannstrasse comes off the pedestrian street leading from Marienplatz to Karlstor. A block later it is Damenstiftsrasse. One more block and it's Kreuzstrasse.
We just returned, and I'd echo the vote for the train to the Hbf and then taxi to hotel. We also stayed about a 10 (at most) minute walk from the Marienplatz, but we arrived at 930am and then had to negotiate the ticket machine, etc to take S1 or S8 (can't remember which!) to Marienplatz.
In "real life" we never do public transportation since it's not available in our small town, so any kind of train/bus, etc is a huge challenge the first time you tackle it. But some folks were very helpful at the airport, and there was a staffed desk - although, again, it was morning (but still - jet lag!).
Good luck! You can get a multi-day SBahn ticket from your hotel. If you're going to be there a few days, it's worth it. We had one that worked for the whole family (3 of us).

Your arguement doesn't make any sense. You'd have to "negotiate" the ticket machine and decide which S-Bahn to take regardless of whether you went to the Hbf or to Marienplatz.
And actually, for Marienplatz, it doesn't matter which S-Bahn you take. Take whichever one leaves the airport station next, and you'll get to Marienplatz sooner. The S1 takes 54 minutes, but if you wait for the S8, which leaves 13 minutes later, it takes only 42 minutes, but still gets to Marienplatz a minutes later than the S1.
Don't expect the taxi to take you directly to the hotel. There are a lot of one-way streets in Munich. When we left Munich a few years ago, we took a taxi because the nearest S-Bahn station was a third of a mile from the hotel, and my partner is "walking challenged". Because of the one-way streets, the taxi had to circle around in town and the route was actually over a mile. Turns out, it would have been a shorter trip, and faster time-wise to have had the taxi go to Marienplatz, which was actually farther away on foot.
Denimo, tell me the name and address of the hotel to which you are going, and I'll tell you how to get there from Marienplatz.
