Travel from Sorrento Italy to Munich and Frankfurt

Hi, I will be visiting Europe for the 1st time with my college age daughter in June 2014. Looking for suggestions for the best cost and time wise to travel from Sorrento Italy to Munich for 2 days then next stop Frankfurt. Also safe central area hotels to stay. We will be using the trains for transportation. Thank you!

If you want to travel during the day, take a Circumvesuviana commuter train from Sorrento to Naples in time to catch ES 9570 to Bologna, departing at 08:05 and arriving at 11:20. Take EC 84 from Bologna to Munich, departing at 11:52 and arriving at 18:21. Book Naples-Bologna on trenitalia.com and Bologna-Munich on bahn.de well in advance to get discount fares.

If you are open to taking a night train, take a Circumvesuviana commuter train from Sorrento to Naples in time to catch ES 9562 to Florence, departing at 19:00 and arriving at 21:51. Take CNL 484 from Florence to Munich, departing at 22:09 and arriving at 06:30. Book Naples-Florence on trenitalia.com and Florence-Munich on bahn.de well in advance to get discount fares. For the night train book either bunks in a 4-person couchette and share the space with strangers or book beds in a 2-person economy sleeper and have the space all to yourselves.

Book Munich-Frankfurt on bahn.de well in advance to get discount fares. You'll have many departure times from which to choose.

Use the bahn.de site to get detailed timetables for all your routes except Circumvesuviana trains. The site does not show timetables for them. They run frequently and the ride from Sorrento to Naples takes a little over one hour.

One more thing: On both trenitalia.com and bahn.de use these spellings for the stations: Napoli Centrale, Bologna Centrale, Firenze S.M.N., Muenchen Hbf, and Frankfurt(Main)Hbf. On each site click on the British flag for English.

Best to fly from Naples to Munich-- much faster and likely cheaper than the train. Check out skyscanner.com or kayak.com. I see Air Berlin flies direct Naples-Munich.

Munich to Frankfurt is easy on the ICE (high speed German trains).
