Travel from Salzburg to Munich Airport

What is the best way to travel to the Munich Airport from Salzburg?

I did it the opposite direction by train - or rather, by S-Bahn into Munich and a train from there to Salzburg. Check www.bahn.com . You may also find some buses (cheaper maybe, but personally I'd take the train) - try www.flixbus.com .

So is there no way to take a train or S-baun from one point to the other without stopping and changing in Munich?

The trains to the airport are S-Bahn's, commuter type trains that run through Munich to the suburbs. The rail line between Salzburg and Munich is a major intercity trunk line. But, you may be able to change trains at Munich Ost rather than the Hauptbahnhof if the timing works right.

No, Munich airport is not served by any trains apart from the city S-Bahn.

The Bahn classifies the S-Bahn as a regional train. So, yes, you do change trains at Ostbahnhof, to an S-Bahn to the airport.

BTW, from maps I have seen, after they finish the second rail line under Munich, there will be trains other than just S-Bahn to the airport.

IMO, currently the best way from Salzburg to MUC is by regional train (Meridian) to Ostbahnhof, where you change to an S-Bahn (S8) to the airport. Going to the Hbf would take longer and the change would be more difficult.

Hi Jackie- there used to be a bus that traveled non-stop between the Salzburg Hbf and the Munich airport and vice versa. Google for it-

Have a great trip!!!

There are four Flix busses a day with two of them running early in the morning. Trains run every hour and the transfer in Munich East is easy. The bus takes 3:05, the train 2:20.

Are you planning to go from Salzburg to Munich to catch a flight the same day? What time is the flight? Or will you be spending the night before catching a flight?

We are considering leaving Salzburg in the early evening and staying the night at the airport to catch a Friday morning 7:05am flight.

Just trying to see if that is reasonable to consider.

Ultimately we are thinking of flying from Munich airport that Friday morning to Dusseldorf to catch up with our other friends from the US but we need to be at Dusseldorf airport by 9am on Friday. We are going to be in Salzburg on Thursday.

There is a train, I am assuming it is the S-Baun, that goes from Salzburg airport all the way to the Dusseldorf airport but it is 9-10 hours and I am not sure if you could sleep through the night on it.

What is sleeping like on the S-Baun trains? or would it be a different type train to go that far?

We are really trying to understand all the different trains there are and when to select the correct one for traveling.

I am sure being our first trip to Europe I will "know a thing or two because I will have seen a thing or two". :)

A S-Bahn is a commuter train not a long distance train. Where did you read about a direct train from Salzburg to Düsseldorf? There is none. You would have to go from Salzburg to Linz to catch the NightJet from Vienna to Düsseldorf (NJ 40490, dep Linz 22:46, arr. Düsseldorf 8:47, carries sleeper and couchette cars). Alternatively, there is a Eurowings evening flight from Salzburg to Düsseldorf.

"What is sleeping like on the S-Baun trains? or would it be a different type train to go that far?"

You'd need some serious drugs to sleep on the S-Bahn! Yes - long distances are most easily accomplished with the Fernbahn (or Fernverkehr) trains - long-distance trains - with the IC, (Intercity) ICE (Intercity Express) or EC (Eurocity) moniker.

Then have a look at this video by Reboss. You can ignore his attempt at humor in the first minute however:
