travel from Munich to Prague

We will be in Munich for Oktoberfest in September. When we leave Munich we will be travelling to Prague. What is the best way to get to Prague, train or bus? Which is the most direct route?

The fastest way to get to Prague is by the Bahn's non-stop IC bus. It leaves from the Munich ZOB at Hackerbrücke and takes about 4½ hours. Buses leave Hackerbrücke three times daily at 7:15, 10:15, and 16:00. With advance purchase the fare could be only 14,-€ for an adult, but full fare is 68,60€/adult. A seat reservation is included.

There are also one change connections going by ICE to Nürnberg connecting to the Bahn's IC bus from Nürnberg to Prague. The trip takes about 5 hours. I see this connection in February and March, but I don't see it running past 5. April. Fares start at 19,-€/adult with advance purchase, "train" specific booking.

The are also four direct ALX trains leaving Munich at 4:55, 9:01, 12:44, and 17:02. They take 5-6 hours. There is a Prag Spezial One Way fare of 36€/adult from automats, no advance purchase required. For the first two connections, you can use a Bayern-Böhmen-Ticket as far as Pilzen and a Czech Rail ticket from there. For the last two connections, the in-Czech train is considered to be an EC so the Bayenr-Böhmen-Ticket is not valid, but you can use a regular Bayern-Ticket to the border at Furth im Wald and a Czech ticket from there.

Our family of 4 took the Deutsche Bahn IC bus from Prague to Munich last January. The bus was great and our 12 year old loved sitting in the front row seats upstairs. Great views, comfortable, on board toilet and drink machine. The bus departed and arrived on time. In my opinion, a great way to travel between the 2 cities.
