Do you suggest a 4 country europass for a quick trip from Barcelona to Munich for a trip through the BMW Welt, then direct to Meisburg/Eifel and on to Liege, Belgium? Or a 2 country Europass and then pay for the Spain/France portions direct to those countries? Thanks!
That may depend on when you are traveling and how soon you'll be certain of your travel dates and preferred departure times so you can buy non-refundable train-specific tickets. When tickets initially go on sale (often but not always 90 to 120 days ahead of time), there are some amazing bargain prices for restricted tickets. After the promotional tickets are snapped up, only the higher-priced categories remain. If you can buy well in advance, I believe you'll save considerable money by not buying a rail pass.
Flying the Barcelona-Munich leg could turn out to be the best plan if your travel dates are not rapidly approaching. Fares tend to be low for tickets bought far in advance. Even if the fare isn't particularly low, you still might want to avoid what looks like at least 14 hours on trains. Check skyscanner for flight info.
Hi,
Logistically, this route Barcelona to Munich of the train could take 4 transfers. I would suggest this: Barcelone to Paris, stay the night, then Paris to Frankfurt on the TGV, then Frankfurt to Munich on the ICE. All this depends on your tolerance for train rides, esp multi-hour ones, (makes no difference to me), whether you are limited to day trains, ie, the night train option is not an option, the time factor. This way you only need a Germany Pass. Doing Paris to Munich I did that route on the CNL night train (no longer exists). Now, I use a advance discount ticket, 92 days out from departure, ie taking the early morning train , arriving in Frankfurt shorty before 11 am., take one hour lunch break, then take the Frankfurt-Munich Hbf on the ICE direct I choose what departure time using the Pass.
Before buying any rail pass, make sure you read this and understand all its points: http://www.seat61.com/Railpass-and-Eurail-pass-guide.htm#railpass-or-point-to-point-tickets
Unless you really want to spend a whole day or more on a train, I would recommend travelling from Barcelona to Munich by air. Lufthansa, Transavia, and Vueling all do that route non-stop.
I think part of the explanation is missing for Fred's conclusion that, "This way you only need a Germany Pass." But anyway, I would fly.
If I were to do that route Barcelona to Munich, I need only the Germany Pass for the Frankfurt-Munich leg on the ICE. I've done Paris to Munich day and night. Night on the CNL prior to its discontinuance, and day on a 92 day prior adv. discount ticket Paris to Frankfurt, then using the Pass Frankfurt to Munich.
